need help asap

heres the deal, for christmas i got new plug wires and $50 to CT so i went ahead and decided to do a complete tune up
parts replaced
-plug wires
-cap and rotor
-plugs
-fuel filter
-oil filter
-oil
-oxygen sensor

car was running fine before, but i was getting really shitty gas milage. after changing all the parts over, my car now runs fine up till 4000rpm, then the tach flutters and the car feels like the govener is kicking in, i have to stay below 120km/h as well.
the car idels fine and start up is good.
im thinking it might be that the rotor isn't tight enough, or the dizzy is going.

any help would be great
thanks

or u have the wires on the wrong plugs/distributor cap plug

high RPM misfire - check and adjust timing and valvelash first. Do you have the correct heat range spark plugs and did you get copper spark plugs? AND, yes the rotor could also be loose.

ALSO, read the plugs to see which cylinder is misfiring. Take out the spark plugs and see which one is fouled from the misfire. Also, it could just be a misgapped spark plug. Then, substitute a known good spark wire and see if it does that again. Some wires are just shitty right out of the box.

plugs were taken off one at a time, so i don't think they areon wrong
hey bruno, i wish you were coming down her this week so you could gimmie a hand! then go to kingdom again

time to check timing then... it's adjustable at the distributor housing but you need a timing light (or gun I forget what it's called) and hook it up to 1stcylinder's sparkplug wire and aim at the timing marks....

might be a dumb question but how would changing the wires and cap change the timing

Chigga1 29-Dec-2003 12:53 PM

i was thinking the same thing!

must be your wires!
and it must be misfiring!

loosen the wrong bolts ... I can see byt he diagrams in the helms manual for my car how it could be done ... completely by mistake....

anyways check the rating of the wires (in ohms) make sure all the power is getting to the spark plugs.... could be a loss of power there as well.... the rating will be on the wires....

It's not so much that it would CHANGE the timing, but rather putting correct or clean spark plugs in there can change the timing that the motor likes. You can't ever be too diligent with this kinda work, so it's nice to start with a KNOWN base time and move forward from there. I have seen bad wires come out of the box, so I would suspect the wires in this case just being crusty quality. Yeah, I wish I could help out, but no reliable cars are available to me at the time... I drive a 86 Prelude now, every day is an adventure. :)

put your old wires back on....what do yoru plugs look like that is key....???? I use to tune by reading plugs..but I have no clue how I coudl help you out in person...sounds liek the cap or rotor mgiht be a shaddy install by yourself no effense...take her into a mechanic cause yoru motor is beign put under more stress at this point in time....on a side note my buddy got shitty champoin plugs put in his mx-3 it ran liek **** and fluttered and missed above 4000 when I saw this I put soem ngk's (personal favorite) in gapped correctly installed his intake with a clean filter and she ran like a champ
