my valves?

today i changed my oil and oil pan. b4 i did that my vavles were making a loud, fast clunking sound. i dont know if oil is not passing thru but it making alot of noise on the top end. answers to what this phenomenon is or can i do to fix this? at first i thought maybe my car needed an oil change cas the oil lite came on but i did everything new (oil pan, filter job,and sensor) its very odd and disturbing! what do i do?

well the oil light came on cause your oil pressure is low, maybe your top end isn't getting enough oil, if the oil light is still on pull the sensor and hook up a pressure guage and see what it's running your oil pump might be going out. I couldnt' see his valves being that far outta adjustment but I'd just pull the valve cover and see if you can see anything messed up.

if you have to ask, it's unlikely... but who knows? do you have feeler gauges, some 10 mm wrenches/sockets, flat screwdriver, 17 mm socket (to turn the crank) and some Permatex ultra gray, and spark plug sockets. If you have that, you can do it... but whether you're able to, it's up to you to decide.

you pop the valve cover and remove the spark plugs. Turn #1 cyl to TDC on compression stroke, then use the 10 mm wrench or socket to loosen the valve nuts, then use the feeler gauge to get the valves adjusted. Tighten the adjusting nuts. Turn the engine 180 rotation (90 degrees on the cam) and then do cyl #3, then turn another 180 and do #4 and then another 180 and do #2. I forget the specs on the actual valve lash, but it should be on a sticker under your hood.

First of all verify that the noise is in fact a valve lash problem. Most times when the oil light comes on it doesnt mean the oil is low it means there is no pressure due to extremly low oil level. When you have no oil pressure, the noise comes next. If its a tick sound it is very possible that its valves, if its a clunk sound there is other issues.

ticking valves...common problem they need adjustment every once in awhile..

when the engine is warmed up does the sound quiet down a bit?

the only way to check if you need a new oil pump is to install an oil pressure gauge, and see what PSI you get when running your car (idle, and when driving)

Personally, I have never seen an oil pump not pump at least the minimum spec needed to lubricate the engine. Just my experence though. I have never changed one unless the engine failed and lots of debris has gone through it damaging the internals. The normal civic noise when cold that knocks is piston slop. I have done enough engines because of that
