Manual Transmission Issue for 7th Civic

hey guys, anyone of you have the same problem?? this happened a couple times already... (for a 2002 Honda Civic Coupe LX manual)

1. when I shift from 1st to 2nd, the shifter felt like popping out of 1st, and when I do shift into 2nd, the gear grinds...
2. I usually have to shift twice to get the shifter into reverse gear when backing in (and I do stop and press the clutch fully)

should I be concerned and call up Honda about these issues?

yes you should call up honda regarding these issues.

I've heard that the new K series have a little bit of a softer tranny...

Are those the only 2 forwards gears that are giving you problems?

I can't say much about Reverse because every honda i've owned has been a little trick with reverse, try shifting into 4th then into reverse...

I could be synchros, if your car was older I would have mentioned that it could be bushings but your car is too young for that.

no bushings used Sam..
it's cable operated (not meaning anything..i just know a lot of people using the bushing/bar setup wish they had the cable system..)

are you using a short-shifter by chance??
nothing specific, just wondering......
i've not had any problems with mine (using the solo adapter)

the grinding is an issue..but again i gotta ask..short-shift??
is your slave cylinder full??

like Sam said..check with Honda, or see if there's any re-call listed for it yet..

no short shifter... everything is bone stock... but I've heard others have the same reverse gear issue though.... I'll check with Honda about my 2nd gear grinding issue, since it's still under warranty

The reverse issue is the same with my 7th gen LX Sedan. It takes quite a bit to get it into reverse..

The grinding you should be concerned about. I've never heard of that problem.

About first gear though.. Does it feel like it's popping out if you let the RPMs drop?

For example.. I'll be in first gear.. I'll rev to 3000 RPM.. then release the gas... immediately the RPMs start to drop... I'll press the clutch and I hear "pop" coming from my transmission. Obviously that can't be healthy so now I rev to 3000 and immediately press the clutch. See if that helps. When I do that... I don't get a pop anymore. As to if the gear pops out of first by itself... I've never heard of that myself or have anything to comment on. Sorry.

my friend who drives a 7th Gen (DriftR if you know him as well), has told me that his tranny messes around with him as well, thats why when he drives now, he slams every single gear into place making sure it's there hahaahh, he had the same problem of the gears just popping out as well.

If you know DriftR perhaps you can ask him if he's found a remedy to it? He doesn't visit these boards at all though, so you'll have to contact him another way

Thanks for the response guys, I'll call Honda about the 2nd gear grinding issue..

as for reverse, I tried shifting into 1st gear first then go to Reverse gear, and I can get the shifter in first try.... this was suggested by one of my colleagues at work... so I'll keep trying this and see if it works everytime...

As for 1st gear popping out, I get them when I left go of the gas... and when rev starts decrease, clutch, and I shift into 2nd, it pops... so I guess I'll just have to hit the clutch right away before the rev decreases....

I have heard about tranny issues on the K series motors (ie. RSX and Civic SiR), but not on the D series, like the one your Civic. Since you are under warranty, might as well pay the dealer a visit.

Good luck.

Was the grinding caused cuz the car was rolling forward or backwards when you engage reverse or was the car COMPLETELY stopped?

I get the grinding when I have the car not COMPLETELY stopped...

When I stop.. I don't get grinding.

It says specifically in the manual to have the car completely stopped before engaging reverse. And you should let your car sit for a moment (1 or 2 seconds) before moving after engaging into reverse...

I had a '01 coupe with manual tranny prior to the car that I have now...
I had the same problem as you, only it popped out of 2nd gear. It also grinded shifting into 2nd.
I took that car to the dealer and there was indeed a part that needed to be replaced. I don't know what the part was though, cuz I traded the car in and let them deal with it.

Now, I know damn well that it's the way I drive, cuz I'm having the same problem with the grinding in 2nd gear on my new car. 1st gear is just too damn short.
I have trouble shifting into reverse as well every now and again.

yup that's because reverse doesnt have any synchros. you got to have the car totally stopped before shifting into reverse.

I have the same problem with my Veloz. Only happened about three timees on me though. I must say that even with this small problem, it shifts 5000 times better than my DSM!
