maintenance light
this is gonna sound stupid, but i read on other forums of people just resetting their maintenance required lights when it comes on and not actually going to a mechanic. is this a good idea or should i actually go see a mechanic?

on a 96 lx?? if the check engine light has come on, you have a problem, and the code needs to be pulled from the computer. I dunno I have a scan tool, but some ppl say you can do it with a paperclip. I know you can do that with the pre 96 models, but 96+ models I was under the impression you need a scan tool like what I've got.

yeah, a 96+ car has On-Board Diagnostics II so if the light comes on, I don't think it's for regular service, I think there is really something wrong with it. I'd have it checked out.

yeah you can find the code with a paperclip on obdII cars.
oh, in some cars, theres a light on underneath the speedometer, my old cluster had it, but ive never seen another civic with it. its usually green, but turns red when maitainence is required i guess. are you talking about that, or the actual orange/yellow CEL inbetween the tach and speedometer?

your asking if you can go with ignoring the light ... sure you can! best way to avoid it is to put electical tape over it.
you know maintaining a vehicle just eats into Modification money ... why maintain a car? Never understood why someone would actually want to maintain a car....

6th gen civics that were destant for the american market came with a maintenance required light under the odometer. i had one in my car until i swapped out the cluster. all it does is goes yellow just before 3000 miles, and then red afterwards.. i think you reset it with your key by pushing it into the slot beside the light. dont worry about it, it just means you have to change your oil

the way to turn out the mait light is highlighted in the owners manual...there is a button around the steering column that you press while turning the car to the on position, then turn it back off then start the car or something like that...all it is there for is to remind you about reg maintenence (oil changes etc)

The check engine light can be accessed through the diagnostic connector by jumping it with a paper clip or somthing, when you do that, the light will flash with the ignitioin switch in the on postion with the car engine not running. count the number of flashes the short ones count as one number and the longer flashes count as ten. cross refrence the number you have with the service manual. It will keep repeating the code till you either turn off the key or take the paper clip out of the connector. The better way is like bb said, to hook up the scan tool and it will give you the DTC. or even the problem depending on what kind of tool it is. probably the emmissions control system malfunctioning. the maint light is on the 01 civic and newer and all other models. The integra has one that says maint reqd. The button is under the dash directly under the steering wheel. Just hold it down as you turn the key on and wait till it goes off. three seconds. It is a run timer it keeps track of milage and time running (Idle). Just a reiminder

Basically if your maintenance is up to date, don't worry and reset the light the way scott newman describes.

On integras there's a little square blue button underneath the dash near where your right knee would be while driving. Just hold that button for 10 secs or so with key on , engine off and the light turns off. Like Cynikal said those maintenance required lights are just oil change reminders , if you change your oil regularly then just reset the light.
