Lug Nut Hell

It's 3pm on Sunday, most department stores will be closed soon.

When I got my new 17", noone told me I need to replace my lug nuts. Sure it was a little hard to tighten the stock bolts but at least they still fit.

Driving home Friday night, my car was shaking and knocking beyond control. I found out the next morning that my front tire only had one lug nut left!

Obviously the stock lug nuts were not cutting it (they were not deep enough). I went to crappy tire for replacements, the ones I got were too thick but had the right height.

I tried Wally an hour ago, same story, they look like they should fit but they're too thick to fit inside the wheel.

Where the hell can I get deep skinny lug nuts to match the new profile for these wheels?

Thanks fellows.

Go to honda and get some.

Not an option, all dealerships are closed until Tuesday which is when I am working.

Pacific mall maybe?

punkindrublic 23-May-2004 03:13 PM

i'd just buy a cheap set and use whatever rims you had on previous and wait till you can get some real ones... cause like you said everything is closed till tuesday :(

Cynikal.Mindset 23-May-2004 03:14 PM

hmmm put your stock wheels back on till tuesday?

mourad 23-May-2004 03:14 PM

never thought of that! :)

Try Part Source they should be open today. Also Punk's idea sounds like a good one.

CT had mcgard's, those are the ones that were too thick. I'm sure mcgard makes many more good ones but finding them will be the challenge.

Part Source doesn't exist in the GTA

shlammed 23-May-2004 03:28 PM

Cynikal.Mindset 23-May-2004 03:29 PM

wow no one has truely helped the dude out.

sorry I didn't see this earlier but I was watching movies...

ok here's what you have to do some wheels like the honda stock wheels require lugs with a curved taper on the part that presses against the rim. other wheels like lots of after market ones require a straight taper on the part of the lug the touches the wheel.

if you mis align these you will either a) wreck the wheels or B) have the lugs come off

make sure you get the right taper on the lugs to match the wheels

Man, I never thought there was much science to lug nuts but there is. Everyone's advice was gold.

I *really* got lucky, took a trip to pacific mall and, in the very last automotive store, I found a guy selling "tuner" lugs which are exactly what I needed. They are the 12x1.5mm bolts with the curved taper design that gatherer speaks of.

The nuts were $2.5 each, that's a good price ($40 for all) considering the cheapest I could find elsewhere was $48.

These "tuner" lugs are skinny and very deep, they fit like a glove. The nuts are tightened by a special key that I picked up for $10 - it was a necessity.

I hope this thread hopes someone in my shoes in the future, and to all the tcc goons, you kick ass!

imported_loudsubz 23-May-2004 10:59 PM

wow kick ass Mo

Im glad nothing bad happened man.

Like you mentioned, those stock ones were not cutting it, there was no way they would stayed on for longer periods of time.. :D

mourad 24-May-2004 08:49 AM

Yeah, who would have thought that thumping noise was my nuts coming off one at a time! I still can't believe I made it home doing 120 on the 407 with a single lose lug nut holding my front tire.

Btw, let it be known that loudsubz is the ultimate mac daddy at suspension tuning. It's like taking your car to a professional shop where they let you get involved and only charge you half price.
Thanks Matt!

punkindrublic 24-May-2004 08:51 AM

i've heard that thumping noise before... only it was cause i forgot to torque down the lug nuts
