low and mid-range power

Well i just bought a 92 eg hatch with a 99 B18B1 and 00GSR tranny. I love how it feels although im still new to the whole b series feel.

Neways the engine is pretty much stock other than a short ram intake. I was wondering what i could do to gain some low to mid-range power. I really want to do a vtec head conversion on the engine but im not sure whether to order a GE kit or go to leitner and have the block machined etc.

What other fairly inexpensive mods could be done to the engine to gain more low and mid-range out of it?

header, exhaust. but you will not notice much gain. the best way to gain an excess of power would be internal work

DOnt bother with an ls vtec unless youre going to do it properly, which will cost a lot, better off doing ls turbo.

What is properly though? There are lots of people that have used the GE kit with no problems at all so why cant i do it that way?

I am planning on doing a turbo setup but that wont be for like a year or 2 so i was looking for something fairly inexpensive that will give me some nice gains.

Budget is the prime consideration here...

For about $1200 I'd look at Port and Polish w/3 angle valve job combined with a large throttle body and header/exhaust. Similar to the Gude Bullfrog set up.

Just header and exhaust will give you a small gain. But if that is all you can afford, well then so be it.

If your budget is over that - then yeppers - turbo is the way..

budget is limited RIGHT NOW but im all about future planning. I put together a pretty sweet turbo setup with an equal length manifold, TiAL WG and BOV, 3" DP and dumptube, T3/T4 turbo, hondata and rest of the stuff but its gonna be a bunch of money so im gonna save up for that over the next year or so.

Right now i still think the best thing would be get a GSR head and slap it on the LS block and convert it to vtec.

Would having headwork and a larger throttle body be worthless if i stuck with a stock LS header and eg exhaust?

Not really - You can port match the header, and enlarge the downpipe - here's the how to on that from the HADA site

http://www.hadamotorsport.com/tech/howto/headermoosification/index.html

It's a nice cheap mod that works...

yeah i see people selling GSR and Type R headers for ike $100 so im wondering if its worth it to jsut get one of those instead of spending alot on an aftermarket one.

As far as heads concerned for flow characteristics does it go (best to worse)
Type-R
GSR
B16
B18B?

If your going turbo in a year or 2, start collecting stuff now. Buy things at your own pace, your in no hurry so you can hold out for deals/prices that you want. And start reading everythin you can about turbo's and anything to do with them.

No sense buying NA things now if your going FI eventually. Although head work is a good plan. b18's will love boost so save up and do it right. just my2 cents

I know deals can be had all the time, especially ordering from the states. But also if i order almost everything from this one place i can get one hell of a deal IMO but its gonna take saving. I dont really wanna do anything for NA but im also considering doing an under the car turbo setup so who knows.

Maybe i should jsut start collecting parts for the turbo setup cause im happy with how the car pulls now.

Under the car? I can barely go over speed bumbs lol but if you have hte room..

Ordering from the states right now is awesome, our dollar makes things pretty cheap. The only down size to buying things slowly is you get really anxious looking for just a turbo/manifold or whatever everyday lol

I've been collecting for a few months, my wideband is in the mail, tomorrow I'm going to get a wastegate flange/dumptube done up then hopefully doing the install this weekend

good luck with the project, any pictures of your civic?

my car isnt super low, i can go over speed bumps without going on an angle etc.

Yeah even just researching awhile ago hardcore daily made me so anxious. I basically had everything setup to be bought but getting the money is a different story. I think piecing together is gonna be tough also because i dont know where i would wanna start lol.

Good luck with the install, hopefully it goes smoothly. What program are you using for tuning, im guessing uberdata if your getting your own wideband.

you can see pics of my EK in my sig link, the eg hatch has no pics yet.

Start with what your goals are, figure out what you wanna buy then start with whatever deal you find first =)

As I'm obd0 I will be using just an afc and dsm 450's. I have an interview for a new job thursday so if that + the install go good I will be converting to obd1 and getting a burner and all that junk for uberdata. The wideband I got at a not bad price because of our dollar again and I figure it'll help keep me from blowing up on the hack.

There's so many little things with making your own kit, like you think you've got everything figured out then you find some other little thing and you're always learning.

if you are going to go turbo then why dont u build your bottom end now and turbo it later. it would be worth it in the long run. you will regret not doin it when u had the chance.

i dont wanna put alot of money into the bottom end but i was thinking of resleeving it with some FI pistons, ARP bolts and few other pieces to strengthen the inside a bit. Dont wanna dump like $5000 into the block.
