IMO, just go with a billet flywheel. It'll be lighter and safer.

I agree... It's definitely not safe... You may or may not have ever heard of flywheels shattering, but it happens... I saw this happen once at Cayuga this year.. It was a green eagle talon... When that flywheel let go.. It spilled all the gutts onto the track. That wasn't pretty nor cheap. Think about this.. if that flywheel spinning at 8000rpm decides to let go.. Those shards of metal are like bullets. Imagine that coming through the firewall.

Spend the money and get a billet... You may save some money getting the stock one lightened, but I sure as hell know my motor and my life is worth more than a few hundred bucks.

3-5 lbs off is nothing to be worried about if it's done right... any lighter then it could become dangerous on a high revving, high output application.. but i don't think G2 racer is pushing 300 horses to the wheels

Yeah, but in that case, the cost vs. benefit makes it totally not worthwhile to undertake. You aren't going to notice much if you only take off a few pounds, but you're going through all the trouble just to do it. Do things once, do things right.

Let's not forget the losses from taking off too much... revs drop quicker, the lighter the flywheel the quicker it drops, in some extreme cases the motor will even stall.. also you'll have a hell of a time going up hill from a start... you wanna build a strictly drag car with lots of power then yeah, go all out with the best, but for the average enthusiast who drives their car everyday paying $600 for a flywheel is not neccessary. Money could be better spent.

if i was pulling for a clutch or something i might shave off a few thou..
but to go out of my way for it? not a chance..
definitely better options available to quicken things up..

Hey fella's. I had my flywheel in my Z6 lightened when I put a new clutch in and I never had a hitch with it, and there was a difference in getting the revs up, never noticed much of a difference in regards to losing revs up top.

Anyway I did it on a brake lath.....................imagine that. Nothing ventured nothing gained. Now I only took about 3-5lbs off, but a bud of mine also did his a while back and he took it right down and never had a hitch with his.

But like the fella's said, there is alway's that chance, and it ain'y going to be pretty or cheap. but ruining is sohc is alot less nasty that a dohc.

food for thought
