Lexus ES 300 stalling after driven around...

98 Lexus ES 300, 145 XXX kms

Ok, this is the problem: When you drive around and the car is fullly warmed up and u park the car and turn it off, it will not restart without stalling. Essentially, after being turned off when warm, the engine will not start back up immediately (within 1-2 mins) without stalling. The revs go up when u start, but then they fall and it turns off.

The wierd thing is, it starts up without hesitation when it is VERY COLD outside. No problems starting up when cold or when u let it sit for about 5 mins after driving it. What could this be?

the coolant temp sensor isnt' typed into anything really important, might be your coil packs acting like little ****'s but other wise take it in cause it could be so many things that a scan tool and a road test could solve easily

its the main relay switch, costs about 60-70 dollars...you can replace it yourself with the manual...

same thing happened to my 90 civic.... in hot weather when you tried to restart it after turning it off for the first 5 min it wouldnt start at all...turned over but wouldnt catch

if its the same thing, look into the main relay..cause a lot of honda cars had them as a recall but no one replaced them

in other words it could be a whole bunch of things... take it to the dealer

dingus, how can you say that??? the CTS is one of only three sensors used to actually start a car. The CTS determines the amount of fuel that will initially be given at startup. If it fails, the engine will flood every time you try to start it.

Kieran, In a civic

under the drivers kick panel, you'll see a square-ish grey box that has one harness plugged into it. It's usually bolted to the side wall under the drivers kick panel. It says MAIN-RELAY on it.

remove the bolt and un-clip the harness.. get new relay and reverse process.

The best thing to do is resolder ALL the joint even if they look ok..

Just dab a little bit more on.. I did all the joints in less than 5 mins.

with the lexus, sounds like some sensor is over heating

i would just suffer and take it to lexus , waste $100 and know exactly whats wrong

they are familiar with those cars

if not just gonna be a guessing game

sounds to me likes its the MAF sensor

anyways good luck

is it not just a toyota camry? i'm not sure on lexus flat rate charges, but you might look into if a toyota dealer charges less.... just a suggestion as i think they are more or less identical cars, i know some parts we've priced at the toyota dealer i work at have been much cheaper than their lexus equivalants... providing they are the same that is... a toyota only dealer cannot order lexus specific stuff straight from toyota... they've gotta buy it wholesale

i know that some of the parts are interchangable, but some are not and toyota will not order them. Lexus is good about giving me loaner vehicles though. I like driving the new ES's and one time i got an IS

Last time i got an oil change done they never had a loaner car ready so they did it for free and washed/waxed my car too

I think Slim K is right. It is most likely the main relay. They are famous for Jap cars. Why spend the $$$$ to check it. I believe that's what the problem is. It also happened to my old acura too. It sometimes starts and sometimes don't, When it sits down for a while like 5-10 min sometimes maybe an hour it will fire back up.
