Question larger size wheels-the effects on speed

i have a questions on changing my wheel and tire size. right now, i have a set of crappy 13" steelies on my hatch. i want to get a set of 15". i spoke to my mechanic/friend on the topic and he said that 205/50/15 will effect my speed and speed reading, but 195/50/15 won't (i.e. what the speedometer reads and the actual speed i am going).

Is there a way to check for myself, whether the speedometer reading is correct when i change the wheel/tires size (i.e. a formula of some sort)?

thanks

well i have seventeens on my civic and i checked it by one of those speed things that they set p so you can see how fast your going. There was one near my work, and my buddy watched the reading on the speed detector, while i watched my speedo, and it was very minila difference

it's usually only very big wheels that throw off the speedo noticeably. However, when you get bigger wheels don't forget the laws of physics. Bigger wheels = more weight = more effort to make that weight spin.

And, even if the calculations say your speedo will be off due to the wheel size, remember that the speedo in your car isn't 100% accurate anyway.

actually, the speedo in your car is hella accurate!! you'd be damn well shocked... though the tolerance is about 2% variation, in reality the gauges that are OEM installed are damn near perfect. Esp. Japanese cars. The days of 2% variation were over with the last cable&gear speedo, so you can forget that. For the record, OEM Honda gauges are made by Nippon-Seiki.

If you're worried about weight and speedo alterations, buy some Gramlights.

it's tire size that makes a difference, not wheel size.

what size tires did your car come with from the factory, and I'll tell you what size tires you need to buy!

I just mean that the small % inaccuracy of the speedometer would be offset by the different wheel size.

I didn't really feel a difference in acceleration and etc when I upgraded 17's from 14's. Lets just say this past weekend, I some how beat a Chevrolet 4x4 Z71 V8 with my little hatch! And guys trust me he was racing, he started revving at me and ****.
