Shocks and struts are similar in that they both damp (slow down) the vehicles motion. The key difference of a strut vs. a shock is that a shock only controls the cars motion while a strut is a locating member of the suspension. What this means is that if you remove a shock the spindle or axle will still be completely attached to the vehicle. If you remove a strut the spindle or axle will be able to move outside of its normal motion. Shocks and struts may or may not have a spring mounted to them either. It is often assumed that any damper with a spring is a strut, this is not the case.

Do some Homework guys. They are not the same.

Cheap and probably very stiff sleeve coilovers will ruin a lower-end shock like a GR2 in no time. Don't bother with the cheap coils and buy a decent lowering spring.

The cheapest performance shock that will handle a drop without giving a crappy ride or blowing in a short time would be the Koni Red. They are about $500.

whats wrong wid tokico blues? they're abt 400.

with regards to the original poster, u wont have a problem with with any shocks u buy to install ur coilovers with, it'll work fine but they WILL eventually blow. cheaper u go proli the faster they'll blow.

just get a shock with a lifetime warranty, then just replace them as they go, since you work at NAPA anyways. werd? werd

that would be alright if you wanted to change them all the time (depending on your drop) Plus eventually companies start to question returns,, I use to work at Vaughan automotive.
do it right the first time and its less hassle.
It would also help everyone help you out if you hinted at how low you want and if ride quality matters

welll i wanna do like a 2.5-3 inch drop....and im not really into modifying my car a lot, i just want to lower it cuz itll look a bit better, but i dont want to spend a lot as in more then $250, is there any places in the GTA where i can get lowering springs for up to $200??

you'd probably wanna go coil-overs. But its going to be bouncy as hell and if you dare to do it on stuck struts I give it a week before you blow at least 2. Spend the money and do it right.
that low, done right should be about $800 roughly.
Theres pros and cons to everything.
pro: looks good, handling etc
con: costs a lot, ride quality etc
I suggest doing lots of research you wanna go that low just for looks and you want to be cheap in doing so
Thats my opinion anyways

hahahahaha 3 inch drop done right costs hella more than $800.

I'd look for short forks, perhaps even custom lower control arms, in order to attempt to maintain the correct geometry. you can't take away 3 inches of suspension travel and expect that it would be 'done right'. no way.
