The short ram is better for a high pitched whistle noise, I can tell you that. As for sheer power, you probably won't notice a difference between the two.

the SRI will give you more airflow but you won't really notice it cuz the difference will be so minescule

get the short ram. obviously its not as good as the cold air but hey. i will get flamed, but there have been proven dynos that cold air is not always that much better then short ram, for many reasons.

I think i am just going to get a drop in K&N and remove the BIG BLACK BOX......cut the end of the large stock pipe and attach another piece to it...........to get colder air into the engine.

what do you guys think?

why would you do that? then get a short ram if that's what you plan on doing... don't butcher your stock system it's like that for a reason

I was also thinking about cutting the stock pipe end and slapping on a cone filter on the end of it............. and removing the stock air filter........... what about this design?

For the peformance difference(not much) just grab a K&N drop in. Otherwise, just buy a cheap SRI(ebay $20.00 LOL) to install and DON'T make a hack job out of the OEM air intake system.

The airbox or"black box" as you call it is there to keep heat out. You won't get any gain's by hacking it off. And Short ram's work best with a heat shield. Do one or the other. Cold air is still the best. No matter what people say. Your sucking colder air from outside of the engine bay. Just get a K&N and leave the stock Airbox. The Ideal system(aside form cold air) would be to leave the stock airbox and replace the Tubing with powdercoated steel right to the throttle body. Trueflow make's them like that. I had one on a Focus and it worked better than the Short ram.

yeah plus you have more piping in CAI so wouldn't there be more heat transfer which equals hot air too?? let's not get too technical. if you have a sohc just grab a sri for cheap. why spend way more money on a CAI for you're sohc when you gains will be minimal and you won't notice anything.

there has been like a million pgs on this issue.

SRI is louder than K&N filter, DONE!

SRI from AEM is also more expensive than drop-in filters. However, some ppl claim that SRI improves their throttle response, but not for me (felt the same).

I juss did this...

remove the OEM resonator, drill a 3 inch hole into the stock EK air box and used the K&N Drop in filter....

cheap intake and uses all OEM parts....I ran like this for 2 years.

Another option which I switched too is the replica J's Racing Intake...which works very well IMO
