Jacking up my car -- Questions again :)

Hi guys,

Over the weekend I've tried jacking up my car again, with the suggestions that I got from you guys before. I jacked it up at the front where the tow hooks are, and put the stands at the jack points on the side of the car. However, I found my jack to be too short, so the metal stands didn't get to extend very much at the back where the side jack points are.

So I proceeded to lower the car, then jacked it up directly from the side jack points. I put the stands underneath my car where the lower control arm meets the chassis. There's a bracket that fastens the lower control arm, and there's a little stick of rubber that sticks out from the middle of it. That's where I put the stands at, and it seemed to be a pretty secure point for the stands. The stands got to extend a lot more and I have a lot more room to work with under the car.

My question is, is that a safe point to put the stands? I'll be doing my first oil change soon and I want to be sure it is, so I won't be risking my life doing it.

Thanks a lot guys! My life is in your hands! :)

jack point is at the front of the car ITS NOT THE TOW HOOKS.

Its one jack point, slightly off to the right of the middle of the car, it is a small piece of metal.

Jack it there,.

Then at the back jack it up by the tow hook.

I definantly do not recommend jacking the car up by the suspension .....

by a bigger jack or place wood under your jack as you go.... it's easy to do

Buy a better jack, the though of using wood freaks me out.

I use the SUV jack stand, gives you LOTS of room.

Jack it up from the front jack point, slip the jack stnad in, (Make sure you had brake is on) if you are a suspenders and belt kinda guy, you can even chalk the rear wheels with blocks.

hey I use wood all the time ... get a piece of 2 x6 my jack fits on that I jack it up and place jack stands underneath the jack stand points on the frame

Thanks guys. I'm thinking perhaps I could jack it up from the side and then stick my stand under the front jack point. That would allow my short jack to jack up the car the highest, without resorting to supporting the car under the suspension. Sounds good? Is that the same for other cars (non-Civics) as well?

if youre talking about the metal bracket that the lower control arm bolts into on the sub frame, you would be safe there....but the jack point is even safer....and it gives you more room to work under the car by moving the stands out of the way

Well if you mean using one jack stand at the front? Not to crazy about that idea.

Using two and the tow hooks at the front??? no... those aren't designed for supporting the weight of the car...

I still think nothing beats the SUV jack... wait for it to come on sale or buy a used one locally off ebay.ca...

My CT 2 ton jack that was like $30 jacks up the car fine, although I also have a 2 1/4 tonne SUV jack as well thats a pig and cannot carry so I gotta drag it everywhere lol.

haha :haha: that's cuz your car's not lowered :p For the rest of us folks, a regular hydraulic jack barely fits under the car... some cars I've worked on, I've had to jack up with the stock scissor jack, just to be able to slip a hydraulic jack underneath the car.

drive two wheels onto a curb, and that gives you enough room too :p LOL

i have that problem... i have to use the emergency jack thing in the hatch to get the lifted
