Irratic Idle

My idle is all wonky. Sits at 500rpm, then after being driven, sometimes it'll bounce between 1500 to 2500. Back and forth, back and forth until I turn it off then back on again. I was told it's caused by a faulty idle air control valve.

I checked the service manual and sure enough there was a test for the IAC valve. So I ran the car till it was warm and the fan turned on. I pulled the plug in the back of the IAC, the RPMs dropped but only very slightly. Maybe 100rpm. The car still ran fine. Chances are it's the IAC. The check engine light came on sure enough. The code was 14 as expected. I have it out of my car. To clean it, do I just spray it with the Carb cleaner/alcohol and hope for the best? Or is there a way to test it before I put it back in the car? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

that's a good link 90ls. There is a test for the IAC... it's resistance. Use throttle body cleaner or something that says it's sensor safe. Or even fuel injector cleaner maybe, though I never tried this.

Also a faulty/broken TPS will cause surging idle, also low coolant will too. (air pockets in the cooling system)

anytime you work with any fluid line, and expose it to air, you MUST bleed the line.. You can bleed your coolant line through the bleeder on the thermostat housing..
