it has to do with fluid dynamics. get a physics textbook from about 2nd year fluid dynamics and you'll understand.

Is it purely basesed on this? I always thought it had alot to do with the filter on it. Because isnt the noise just the air being sucked through the filter?

Not saying your wrong just wondering

Most intakes, at idle, you usually hear a hissss as the air is being sucked through the filter. As the engine revs and your at WOT, you hear more of a deeper tone 'BOOOOO' which I believe is the sound of the puleses of air being sucked into each cylinder throught the ports as the intake valve open and closes. Thats why on DOHC VTEC motors you hear that 'slap-you-in-the-face' roar when it hits the magical rpm.

The sound depends on the filter type/size, and the type of intake.

What happens if you have a no name brand filter and a no name brand intake? I heard the intake on my cuz car and is was loud and it made a hiss noise when he turned off his car..and it also made a noise when he was driving. How come mine doesn't do that? Is it becuase its a no name brand crap?

Most aftermarket intakes hiss when you shut the engine off. One cylinder is usually on the intake stroke when the engine stops cranking when you shut it off and you here the air being sucked into that cylinder.

What intake do you have? short ram or cold air intake?

What car/engine does your cuz drive?

What car/engine do you drive?

honestly man, that doesn't make any sense... oil doesn't pass through the filter as rapidly as air passes through the cone so obviously you won't hear the oil filtering....

I'ver tried a few different filters and noticed slightly different sounds from each one... but different designed ones as in flat top and the ones with the holes through the centre will make slightly different sounds...

if you want your intake to make that sucking noise... just stomp on your gas pedal to the floor and let off rapidly and it makes the cool thump noise... but, its more noticeable on a full cold air.

who cares what it sounds like, get the one that performs the best.... too many people are concerned about how the car sounds and not how it performs. just because it "sounds fast" doesn't mean it is.

Totally agree....was just answering the guys question...thats all.

I've got a $70 sri with a BPi velocity flow stack and a huge-*** **** of a K&N filter on it. It performs amaizingly well...the deep roar that eminates from under the hood when vtec hits is just a bonus!

Could sound like a freakin wheezy vacum cleaner for all I care....lol.
