Installing ONLY rear sway bar... good/bad?

I have an ek hatch with no factory sway bars. I was thinking about only installing a rear sway bar to eliminate some understeer under hard cornering at the track. Has anybody ever tried this and had track experience with only a rear sway bar? Will this have any adverse effects to the handling of the car?

Thanks

How thick of a bar do you plan on using?

Let's just say for example an '99-'00 SiR rear swaybar (13mm).

We can use that as a baseline.

You will experience oversteer.

I did the same thing with my 22mm rear sway and car swings out quite easy. I did that because I couldn't install the front by myself (but I do have front sway bar now). SiR is 14mm I think but regardless, the effect won't be as obvious.

charles...the opinions are divided when it comes to using some sort of subframe reinforcement with rear sway bars @ 22 or 23mm atleast (itr ones for example).

what do u think? is it really required if the car is a)daily street driven or b)tracked once in a while.

You can reinforce the inside of the subframe. The "add-on" plate is just another answer.

Spring rates and shock travel also play a factor.

You either reinforce the inside, or put a plate on it. That would be my choice.

i'd have to say the rear subframe reinforcement is mandatory if you plan to use a larger bar. if you put a large bar on the rear without reinforcement, it'll put alot of stress on the subframe even on the streets... if you go over speed bumps diagonally, you'll be 3 wheeling.

i had the SiR 13mm rear sway on my car last summer.. and took it off for winter... and its like a night and day difference...

I had an SiR rear bar, no front bar. The effect was only noticable at the driving limit, and it was kinda minor. A fatter rear sway is more rewarding, but the car def changes it's attitude through the corners after, making it somewhat challenging to drive on the street. I use a 22mm rear and 26 mm front now.

yeah you wont feel much of a difference with an oem sir rear sway bar. best thing to do would be going with an itr rear sway bar and a rear subframe brace.

Thanks for all the responses.

Everyone else feel free to post your experiences (track experiences are especially welcome =D).

Nova_Dust, you stated that with only the rear 22mm swaybar your car became quite sensitive in the rear. Did the car become uncontrollable? Did the benefits outweigh the losses?

Simply put, is having the rear 22mm swaybar better than having no swaybar at all?

why don't you try with just the rear on yourself. some people like it, some people don't. try having only a rear bar on. if you find it too much then slap a front one on.
