Talking Increase Horsepower

I would like to add some serious horsepower to my 98HB DX. I would like to gain an extra 40horses at least. Can anyone give me some advice on what would be the best way to go without replacing the engine. I would like toinvest at least $1000.00 in this ...any advice???? anyone??? Also I do not want to install NOS. Please help.

Thanks.

for $1000 there's not that much you can do ... hmm...unless you pull the motor out yourself and take it apart and then send it to the machine shop to mill the head a little to raise compression, and then purchase some different pistons to bump it up some more and then get some cams, only then you'll be maybe hitting 40hp ...that's not even for sure.

NOS is the quickest way to get your power, any other alternative won't work because although $1000 is alot of cash, $1000 isn't much in terms of modifying a car to gain 40hp off a SOHC too

Nope...not for $1000 and 40 horses...A grand will get you a cat back and an intake...about 10 horses max. You can advance the timing, remove power steering, strip the interior, and get a used performance cam, used intake, and used exhaust, and that might feel like 40 horses due to the reduced weight and parasitic loss. Otherwise, a used turbo kit, but those go for more than $1000.

Thats about it.

IMAO you could......
Sell the DX +your $1000 and buy a hybrid. 5 gen b16 say. Then you will see 40+hp and a better base to build from.

Yeah guy! B16 all the way, better than spending tonnes of cash on a SOHC engine only to find out it sill doesn't make more HP than a b16. Might as well start with that.

And I would like to know why SOHC engines are sooo bad? No potential? What about the 500hp D16Z6 in the crx, running 24 psi of boost? I guess it has no potential.

This is a rather silly point because this is far from reachable for the average hobbiest....especially one on a $1000 budget

Also - throwing psi at an engine does not translate into potential because I think the arguement about potential was made in relation to a b-seies motor. Therefore, the power seen from a b-series on 24 psi would grossly dwarf the power seen on a d-series on 24 psi....therefore again, the d-seris has way less potential.

Potential... ok.

But show me charts of similar b16 build ups running that much psi, I wana see the diff between them.

Its easy to say, get a swap, but who knows how the engines were treated, if the guy loves his engine and knows how well he treated it why not just keep it??

Even if he got a b16 for his car, thats what? like $4000 more, and for the price he could save his engine and got a good turbo for it, and done some other mods to it, and beat the b16 hp wise, it depends what he wants out of it? Street use? Whose gonna use over 200hp for the street? Track? If hes serious than the possibilities are endless.

Id say the reputation of the shop goes in with the swap. Leekdown and compression tests can tell if engine is healthy. Plus most moters come form japan, so you know they have low km.

NOS is the only option in that price range. The next cheapest will be a B18B, which will give you 140hp.
