I put the turbo back on but have 0 boost... any suggestions?

okay, i have a 91 with T25 turbo w FMIC, bov. About a month ago i took the turbo out thinking i'm going to put it on my 92 EG.. didn't happen, so now here i was trying to put it back on my 91...

I put everything back together, and it's either i have 0 boost or extremely little that it doesn't move the needle enough to be seen. I got vacuum though, but no boost...

I'm thinking it's the wastegate...
It is a T25 turbo, it's got a thing hanging off the side that almost looks like a bell but enclosed and it sort of plays around a bit, as in it moves a bit... If i remember correctly, this was tacked on to the exahust manifold, but i could be very wrong...

so, that's the story.. could i have been right about wastegate being held somewhere firmly? I also have some a line left over to my right side... it's not oil feed, return, breeder line... it's just there...

Anyways, any suggestion would be helpful.. Thanks

ok that bell looking thing is the wastegate, and the line you got left over is the vacuum/boost line that actuates the wastegate. hook it up and see if you get any boost... should hook up to the top of the diaphram of the wastegate (bell looking thing). also check all your hose connections are there and tight.

imported_chris_v2 05-Apr-2007 08:24 PM

sounds like a wastegate problem to me. If you listen closely to the turbo to you hear a rapid ticking?

brianmcgaugh 06-Apr-2007 01:18 AM

post pics of your engine bay, might help some of us to see , to actually find the problem.
But id say check all your vac lines.
and make sure its not a indication problem, try swaping your boost gauge source line.
and what's a "breeder line"?

moto_spritz 06-Apr-2007 02:27 AM

lol did i say breeder? i did... i meant to say the line that hooks up to the breather filter.

anyways, i think that's where it is, the waste gate... i don't remember a line going directly to wastegate. But there is however a steel line that hooks up to the turbo (from the wastegate) and a line is looped within that steel line. I'll see tomorrow... my memory is not serving me right.. Anyways i'll keep this thing posted. Thanks a lot

bbarbulo 06-Apr-2007 10:42 AM

interesting.... so how do you suppose the wastegate is controlled than, if not by vacuum/pressure line on the diaphragm.

moto_spritz 06-Apr-2007 12:03 PM

no that's what i mean, the line is probably that, cuz that steel line i was talking about only connects the turbo with wastegate... i think it is just some kind of extension to make lining easier? anyways... i'm gonna go hook it up in like 20 mins.. cross my fingers lol thx a lot

moto_spritz 06-Apr-2007 06:12 PM

Okay, crap i forgot to take pics but anyways,
i hooked up the line to the wastegate, the turbo is working
it spools up to 3psi now... it was spooling to 8 psi everytime i hit it before i took it off... I do have leak by downpipe.. but could this really cause this much of lack of boost? and that bell thing... it's attached to the actual turbo by a thin metal rod, maybe quarter inch, and it moves almost like a part in carburetor's throttle that tooth pick looking thing that goes up and down... (sorry about my lack of knowledge, but the way the metal rod moves reminds me of helping a friend of mine rebuild a carb) anyways other than that it's good. anyways, would exhaust leak be able to cause this, and is that wastegate supposed to be fastened down to something?

The downpipe leak... hmm i can't really explain the severity, but you can see it leak out of there, out of the 3 bolts, i only have one in because i lost the other two, that's why it's leaking...

again thank you everyone for reading me and giving me suggetions, i really appreciate it

bbarbulo 06-Apr-2007 06:16 PM

yeah, fix the exhaust leak first, if it continues to happen we'll continue helping. but you can't expect to 'fix' and issue when you have another obvious contributing factor. and yes, exhaust leaks absolutely cause very very low boost. .... the path of least resistance.

We need pics now!! It will be allot easier to help you if we can see whats going on under the hood.

dingus888 06-Apr-2007 08:54 PM

wastegate not hooked up fix exhaust leak wastegate could be seized open apply pressure to wastegate to test action. hook line up properly

The two lines, one go to the pipe that comes right out of the turbo(on the way in) and the other one i just hooked up to the wastegate as suggested.

It's not too clear but there's another line at the bottom of the waste gate... and it kind of loops itself i don't know how it works... and the wastegate moves around side to side... is it like on and off position?

complicated looking hosings

couple bolts missing here... but no leaks here

but leaks from right there where there's no bolt

Don't think i'm just expecting to be fed, because honestly i do appreciate every single bit of information given... thanks again
i'm gonna go look up how wastegates work and why it moves around lol

imported_chris_v2 07-Apr-2007 04:42 PM

oh man.. what a mess..

LEITNER 08-Apr-2007 08:19 AM

lots of missing bolts is always a good thing to see...

moto_spritz 08-Apr-2007 08:31 AM

yah, the ones by the turbo manifold just sheered off, i get how turbo works basically and stuff but all thsoe lines are just not making sense to me lol

imported_t_dot_SiR 08-Apr-2007 12:33 PM

atleast put back some bolts first :)

moto_spritz 08-Apr-2007 01:07 PM

ya that's what i'm going to do lol i just uploaded the pics just incase some of the lines are mixed up or something like that... i think i got a vac leak somewhere too the car idles at 2000... in the winter it was running 1000 smooth

d16z6T 08-Apr-2007 03:21 PM

Click on G2IC turbo guide on the right. All the info you need will be there.

zeeman 08-Apr-2007 04:11 PM

i'm actually gunna go outside and take a few bolts off my car....see if it runs better...lol....j/k

Fix the vacuum routing, you prolly just have an open vacuum line somewhere.

Revolution909 08-Apr-2007 05:07 PM

Yea seriously bro if your problem could be directly related to those missing bolts. Put one in even where its not leaking from. Also like everyone said check your lines, man i have had vaccum lines that look A-1 but when i inspected them they fall apart.
