I never had a chance......
I never had a chance to respond to cosmic's comment in the Ractive coilover thread.....
You forgot to mention how low it was(new ride). You also forgot to mention how low the "old" car was as well.
I know how low the new ride was, and I saw pics of the other ride as well. Your new ride was lower.
You also didn't mention if your new ride still had the stock struts on the car. I would take a guess and say yes.
Right there, is what I'm talking about. Without even knowing if the car had GOOD stuts, (seeing the car, I would take a guess and say no, [not ment to insult you car] ), that's one of the biggest problems I hear about, when people complain about coilovers in general.
How low you can go before ride quality is compromised? I would say upto 2". cosmic, your new ride was lower than that.
cosmic, I want you to be honest.........can you honestly say WITHOUT a doubt, that if your coilovers were NOT slammed, and if your struts were in good condition, and assuming that there were INSTALLED PROPERLY, that the ride wouldn't be good ---> very good?
You can close this thread after you answer my question.....
Oh, and BB, my comments in the other thread were not directed at you; but made as a generalization of ALL the stuf I have seen over the past year.
I sometimes wish I can be on the board during the day so I would have been able to respond before Bond closed it. Oh well.
Explain this to me then.....a freind picked up a set of the R1's/Tom's for his LUDE. (same year as Electronblue's) He originally had Neuspeed sport and koni yellows. When he switched to the coilover's, he used his stock strut. He droped the coilovers to around 1.8 (around the same as the "sports"). He says his ride is more responsive, and much smoother. He also said said that he wouldn't be going back to the old setup, because they sucked when he compared them to the stock strut and coilover setup he has now.
I know who did the install, so i know it was done RIGHT. He also had GOOD struts, and DIDN"T go lower than 2".
PS. thanks for the corners cosmic.
when i bought my car.... it already had R1 coilovers installed
and it was a bouncy bumpy ride.......cornering was great... but how many corners am i gonna take living downtown???
previous to this I've also had koni/rensport springs (on my old civic) the ride was good... but still bumpy and bouncy... and that was with the new shocks

I was actually planning on going the coil-over route when I was looking into lowering my car. When I did some research and read most peoples negative comments about affordable coil-overs, I decided to go the H&R sports route instead.
After I had the springs installed, I was displeased to see that the slight lean my car had was more pronounced with the drop. If I had gone the coil-over route in the first place, I would have been able to even out the lean problem and probably would have been happier with the setup.

So coilovers at a 2" drop is the same as springs at a 2" drop. Ride quality and durability?. Do springs seize up in the winter like coillovers might? So if going with coilovers doesnt it wear out your stock struts faster? than say if you went with springs? Is it stryts or shocks?

If you keep the threads of the sleeve greased/lubed, as well as the bolt that goes though the locking ring (found on some coilover models), you shouldn't have a problem with them rusting together. Like I said, a friend has a set of old Ractive ones on his car, and he drove though a few summer/winter seasons with no prob, BUT he also takes care of his coilovers.
So if going with coilovers doesnt it wear out your stock struts faster?
Is it stryts or shocks?
Now, please keep this thread on topic.

Yes, I know the "ring" in that pic is upside down. Those were not set up by me, but by someone else.
This is what I mean by getting them installed PROPERLY.

I knew you would see it. LOL
That is why I used a ------->
I also didn't say who's pics it was.....you did.
Did you finally put them in? Or did it go into someone elses car?
How low did you go?
Did you keep the stock suspension?
How does it ride?
Answers damn it.

But other than that I would have prolly stuck with the R1's.

when i got the car... YES it was dumped 4"
BUT i did raise it up to 2"....ride still was bumpy
and yes it was on stock shocks... but after removing them and inspecting them... i can tell you that they were replaced and were in great condition when i took them out
NOW i also used the comparison of my lower priced rensport springs and KONI shocks....in my old car.....the ride was good...
but it doesn't compare to the h&r/koni combo that i have installed right now....sorry.... but it doesn't.
now... as another comparison.... have any of you riden in vince's prelude? he has the tein coilovers in it... and the ride is 10 times better than what mine is right now... and 100 times better than the r1 coilovers that i had
now why do you suppose the tein coilovers are $1500 and the r1's are $100

Come on cosmic......you know just like I do that those struts may have seemed OK, but I'm 100% sure that if you compared them to a NEW set of stock struts, that they would be lazy in their return characteristics....ie....."responce".
There is no way that a car with a 4" drop with stock struts wouldn't have SOME damage done to them.
By the way, have you checked to see if your ball joints have any play in them? (with a previous 4" drop, they might/should). Check them out just in case.

if you want the best of both worlds, get springs...then when winter rolls around, take it to the shop and put back on the originals......then in spring....put back on the springs.....repeat each season.
If you don't want to do that....
1. don't lower it
2. get coilovers and MAKE SURE you keep the greased/lubed to keep them from seizing up.
3. do what I said in the paragraph above. (switch in the spring and fall/repeat)
How much work you are willing to put in will determine what you should pick.
Remember, even Tiens or GC corrode/seize when the are not taken care of.

But how much is it to remove in the winter then reinstall in the spring?
Is it worth the cost ? B/C even if the R1's / low end coilovers only last one spring and one winter , you save money with the install and reinstall of the springs anyways. Am I right?
