I need help....Honda Is screwing me
Someone help me PLEASE.
I have a 2003 Honda Civic SiR EP3 with 47,000 kms.
Thursday night I parked the car had a coffee and went to start the car to go home. The second I started my car the Check Engine Light came on and the car ran like total garbage. It had a really rough Idle and I had very little power when I drove home (2 km). The next day I had the car towed to Pickering Honda because I have CAA and I didn't want to break anything.
Honda called me this morning and I dropped by to talk about what was wrong. They told me an Engine Overspeed code was showing on the ECU. They said that this code means the problem is my fault.
They said this code comes up immediately after someone shifts down to the wrong gear at speed causing the engine to rev extremly high. (something I've never done).
I then asked to see the code myself to see the data. Before they showed it to me they told me they had had new 6 speed Accords in for people shifting down to the wrong gear. They said the 2 they had seen rpm's of over 12,000 rpm's on the error code data.
My codes were.
Misfire cylinder 1
Misfire cylinder 2
Misfire cylinder 4
Engine Overspeed (at 879 rpm)
The data shows the "overspeed" occured at Idle which confirms that occured as soon as I started me car. Even with the rpm data, they want $875 to pull the heads off the engine and diagnose the problem and possibly $3000-$4000 for new heads for the engine.
My only recourse now is to call Honda Canada on Monday and see what they say. If anybody has any help to offer me, please help me. I've babied this car and driven it with the intention to make it last well past the 160,000 km extended warranty I purchased from what I assumed was a respectible car manufacturer.

that sucks, I would def try to talk to the regional service rep, ORRRR take it to another dealer closeby and get a second opinion. maybe send a private message to MY SiR, it may be possible he'll know what the best course of action would be.

Engine overspeed. wtf? I have never heard of that code before. And how the hell would an accord reach 12rpm without blowing to bits, hell I dont even think there is physically any way it could rev that high in the first place. I dont know man but it sounds like Honda is leading you on, I could be wrong though.

i've had bad experience with picking honda
they sealed a water leak on my old si, charged 300+, after it continued to leak, they checked it out again, and said they couldn't fix it
So I asked for my money back, and they said no, because i did something to the car after they fixed it that caused to leak again
and in the process, they scratched my car, but of course according to them, they didnt
try another dealer

I'm to call Honda Canada tomorow. Service at the dealership has said that without the go ahead from Honda Canada so long as that code is on the ECU, Honda won't pay for the warranty work. To Honda Pickerings credit they are the ones telling me to call Honda Canada because something is not right. I'll go to other dealerships if this doesn't work out. But the car isn't really driveable so I can't simply take around from dealer to dealer.
Thanks for your help guys, I'll keep you updated.

That's quite unfortunate. A 2nd opinion is definitely helpful.
Worse comes to worse, if you must spend that much money one way or the other, just drop in another engine and call it a day, like seriously.
Good luck

i have a honda 2002 si - and i kick the **** out of it - never had anything like that come up - shift from 5th down to 2nd and **** like that- never in my life a code like that comes up- if it would i would be screaming my *** off- i will drive the car the way i want to drive it not the way they tell me to dirive it- if the engine or the ecu is ****ed and it is under warrenty then fix it- would they want me to baby the car because its on warrenty- lol- i know they have a block box these days that records your speed and ****- and franly i dont give a ****- if i choose to rev the engine as high as it goes then they should have set the limiter lower-
You should tell them - HONDA ENGINE CANT SUPPORT HIGH REVS- (whats that new comerical say - aluminum alloy race ready engine) - its probably and electrical problem anyways- reset your codes and ecu and see if it happens again.

This reply above is now currently the most stupid reply I have ever heard ....(In this Thread). If everyone's suggestion is so stupid then perhaps you would care to add some of your own input to help the guy out.
Anyway don't give up on it, if you push and complain enough they will fix it.

Wow, I'm really sorry to hear about that, man. I've have no advice to give you other than to echo what other people said: take it to another dealer. Secondly, try posting this up on ephatch.com in the engine department. A lot of good people are there (including some Honda technicians) that might be able to give you a hand. Good luck.
