I know nothing and need some help

Hey; First off I don't know jack about cars I wanna learn but currently I know diddle do dum nothing.

I bought a 98 DX and tonight as i'm driving my check engine light comes on: What would make this turn on? Anything I can figure out on my own?

Also when I push in the clutch there is a low rattle noise and when it's out there is nothing... Also sometimes when I put the car in reverse I'll pop the clutch and hear nothing but grind and then have to pull it back some more to get it in reverse.

My engine bay is a f***in mess; it has never been cleaned or anything of the sort; is it a good idea to get it cleaned ASAP?

Is there anyway to know exactly what has been done to the car and what needs to be done?

Thanks for your help
- John

Take the car to a reputable mechanic and have them give the entire car a once-over. You could give it a simple tune-up and it will run better. The brakes and clutch may need to be replaced, the suspension may be worn if the car has lots of k's or has been lowered.

Did you get it checked-out before you bought it?

the clutch noise i think most cars do that 2 a point but if its realy loude i would get it looked at

the motor being clean is not inportant 2 its runabuility but if there was a problem like oil leak water leak headgasket leak its mutch harder 2 see if its covered in ****

i think in the dx if u look in the pasangers side footwell the computer wil be up against the outside wall and there should be a blue plug above the compter not plugged into anything

i think its blue anyways get a paperclip and push it in boath holes so it makes a continuas curcuit u can use some wire or whatever u have tinfoil

this wil make the engin light on the dash flash codes at u

a long flass is a 10) a short flash is a 1 so if u get _ _ _ --- thats 33

then go get a manual on your car from crappy tire or somethin and the codes wil be in there

or just take it 2 a rep mecanik like he said

sounds like your release bearing is the problem. You said it only makes noise when you press the clutch? Is it like a grinding sort of noise?

how many kilometers on the car? that can give you an idea of what maintenance needs to be done.. but other than that just inspect everything.. make sure all the fluids are still a good colour, maybe do a tune up... spark plugs, fuel filter, air filter, oil change.. check your belts and make sure they're not worn.. if you're worried or need to, change the belts, water pump, oil pump.. there's lots you can do lol

That's what happens on Hondas. Try holding the clutch down and putting into first gear first and then with the clutch still down go into reverse.

The car has 179000KM; I checked out the car and drove it a bit but no I haven't had the car checked out by a mechanic. The air filter was BLACK when I got it.... I haven't looked at anything else. This morning I checked my oil and it was dry.... nothing showing of the dipstick so I popped in 1 and a half bottles of 10w 30.

The engine light is still on.... however the car sounds better now but I haven't checked the other fluids; I will be doing that sat morning.....

I know this is really really bad but I wanna make it right damn it!

no offense to you.. but this is not the time to learn if you don't know what you're doing.

Take it to a mechanic. Get a professional opinion

When i first started learning how to drive stick, I had the same problem. If after you put it in first and you still cant get it into reverse, try moving forward a little bit, make sure the car completely stops and then try to put it in reverse. Works for me.

As for your engine bay being a mess, get someone who knows what they are doing to shampoo it for you, makes a big difference. Not performance wise, but nicer to work on and look at.
