I am going 180 in 3rd gear?????

I recently got:

- front snow tires (60/14/195)
- new tranny (the guy said it was from a 99 "usdm si" but there is no si in the us, so it must be an ex)
- new clutch (stage 2)

however:
- at the top of 2nd I'm going 120 km/h
- at the top of 3rd I'm going 180 km/h
- there is NO power after 6500 rpm

1. whats the cultprit??

- do smaller profile tires make that much of a misreading in the speedometer???

- or did I get y6 tranny? I know the y6 tranny has longer gears, which affects acceleration yes, but speed also?

2. why the massive power loss? does my clutch need to be worked in? or can I just not drive.

hope you all are well
thanks.....

If you got a D-series tranny then that would explain your long gears. My stock D-series motor and tranny go up to 120km/h in 2nd and around 180km/h in 3rd gear. If you look in your stock owners manual it will tell you the top speed in each gear.

A USDM Si is the equivalent of a Canadian SiR which should be a B-series transmission. But you have a D-series motor and that wouldn't be able to accept a B-series transmission. Therefore, I'm suspecting you got a D-series transmission.

IF you had a transmission with shorter gear ratios it affects acceleration by keeping your engine in the powerful part of it's rev range therefore you will accelerate faster. This directly affects the top speed you will be able to reach in each gear because you will be hitting redline earlier in each gear (thus having a lower top speed in each gear as opposed to the top speed of a longer gear).

Nothing is wrong

thats probably a stock Y7 tranny from a civic DX....Its definatly no SI tranny from the z6 or y8.

That tranny was pretty much made just for fuel economy and doesnt work very well for power.

thanks for the responses guys.

this confirms my suspicion... non-vtec tranny. I was in shock too when I first drove it.. I dont normally swear but I was like WT...!

disappointing b/c the car was all about 3rd gear and now thats gone... pushing it is just too risky

what disappoints me the most is the guy who did the job insists "you didn't specify you wanted exactly a y8 tranny".... and to think i went to him b/c I trusted his judgement and experience.

well... I spoke to him today and he said he is 100% certain the tranny was out of a 2000 si coupe.

he told me to take a look at the tranny itself and check the code, it should say S4C for the us si, and s20 for the DX

if it turns out its the DX tranny he put in then I have a case.

I'm also investigating whether the 00 si has a longer geared tranny than the 98, in which case I have no case.

I only did it once... I promise, just to see where 3rd gear topped out.

Going to check the tranny code soon... found some good info on d-series.org, If I understood correctly the ex/si has teh code s20-b000... alternatively the lx/cx/dx has the s20-a000

what I'm thinking is, the only racing I'll do with this car is a lapping day or two a year.... would the longer gears be better for lapping or not.

I could get a p28 and up the revs to 7800 or so, and just stay in 2nd the whole time lol

At Shannonville you will be in 2nd gear throughout the whole course pretty much. You can shift up into 3rd gear on the back straight and front straight but then you gotta shift down shortly after. Haha. At the end of the day you'll probably have enough gas to go home too due to the great fuel economy (just playing).

My d-series is the sux =(

If you're gonna track with that motor I suggest just building up the handling of your car so you can atleast keep your speed up in the corners even if you don't have much on the acceleration side.

its def a y7 tranny... i used to go like 175 at like 7100 rpm in 3rd gear before and if you have the si it should rev a little higher... you aren't risking anything driving that fast anyway... you are at 7000 rpm in 1st 2nd, whats the diff in 3rd? just there a little longer. i spun a bearing takinig 3rd up there, but that was a long time ago and i swapped after... i would get the si tranny cause the gears are short, but it sucks when you are going like 90km/hr and you can only really go to 3rd... whereas the y7 slam it in second and be gone. i liked my setup before.
