how to tell you have lowering springs
i bought springs along with a pretty crappy motor that i was told ran. so i dont think the springs this guy sold me are actually lowering springs.. is there ay way to tell if they are or not? other than actually putting them on.
|
looks like theres red paint on them aswell.. but most has flaked off.. did 88-91 civic stock spring have red paint on them?
|
They might be painted some other colour besides basic black or they might have a name or part # of some kind. You could always compare them to a stock spring.
|
yeah maybe count the number of coils and the space in between and compare it to a stock spring to determine if they are stock or not.
|
kinda hard to do that with the stock springs on the car. the lowering springs i got are pretty rusted so i dont think theres any kind of part number visible.
the rear lowering springs also had the rubber things that kinda clip onto the coils.. same as stock srpings. i just dont want to put these springs in my car and have the same height. |
ugh.. if they are all rusted I would put them on my car period.

usually ur car would be a little lowered than stock if u had lowering springs.
|
these springs are NOT on the car. STOCK original springs are on the car.
its surface rust. this is for 88-91 civics by the way. will put up a picture today when im done work. thanks |
red i would say they are lowering springs...i had gr-2's on my ef and they sucked with a 1.5 drop...
|
well.. honda tech people say lowering springs arent any shorter then stock.. dont see why. maybe i'll just do one and see if its lower. iv got kyb shocks/struts for them.
|
some of them are, some of them aren't. and even number of coils and coil spacing doesn't really mean much... (well coil spacing does, but it's very difficult to measure).
IMO, if you really wanna see if they are OEM springs or not, what I'd personally do is find a spot on the springs that's not rusted and measure it with a vernier. then I'd go to the stock spring and do the same. The thicker material is likely a higher rate 'performace' spring. |
i could probably measure it with something els since i dont have micrometer.
|
vernier man, not micrometer. I wouldn't put my micrometer on dirty ass springs, that's for sure.
|
lol.. sorry thought they were the same thing. dont have one of those either.

4 Attachment(s)
i finally got off my ass and took pictures.. im thinking they were cut and painted. tell me what you think.
Attachment 41353 Attachment 41354 Attachment 41355 Attachment 41356 some guy living in the building told me not to use them if they are this rusty. but iv seen rusty springs all the time. |
why dont you just buy newer aftermarket springs their soo cheap and easy to install as well.
|
because i have these.. im gonna install them tomorrow.
|
it's just surface rust, go ahead and use them. those look a LOT beefier than stock springs... I'm willing to say it's an aftermarket spring, but no way of knowing what kind.
and no those don't look cut, usually when ppl cut springs they use a cutoff wheel which leaves a smooth edge... those rough edges mean it's cut on a sheer press, so it's most likely a factory edge. |
ok thanks.. they go on tomorrow then.
