How to know when clutch/tranny needs to be replaced.

Other than the obvious loud grinds and slippage, what are some tells on when you need to replace your clutch and or tranny.

At what # of km did you change your clutch at?

Im at 160k on my 98 si and i am beginning to feel some sort of grinding between gears, no apparent power loss but everything around the shifter does seem/feel a bit more metal-on-metal. Its as though i can hear/feel the fly wheel as well as the clutch grabbing gears.

This is my first standard car and i have had it for 6 months. I do not engage vtec on a daily basis and never ride the clutch, grind, stall etc. But i find myself bumping/bouncing a little between gears s well as some clutch riding.

Feedback is appreciated.

many things could tell you that your clutch is going.. slippage, chatter, it wont release properly, its noisy when pedal is depressed, excessive pressure, etc.

A few of those could be because of a worn pilot bearing or sticking linkage or many other problems.. but im just throwing out some ideas.

tranny could be a few things also.. grinding gear, difficult to shift, it jumps out of gear, etc.

Sometimes just a tranny fluid change can work wonders.
For your tranny to be going out around 160 is kinda odd. I'm at 328XXX in my 96' SI and it's only stiff when cold. No grinds.

Isn't there a test to see if your clutch is going bad by putting your car in 5th gear and releasing your foot off the clutch slowly. If the car doesn't stall right away then your clutch is slipping. Something like that.

People do that with 3rd and even that puts a strain on the clutch.
My test is to see if I can chirp second. I can chirp 3rd with b16a EF so I know my clutch is good. But I can't chirp third in my EK.

I found out my clutch was gone when i went to start my car and my clutch pedal didn't come back up lol what ended up happening was the clutch master cylinder was leaking fluid so i burnt out my clutch:( $560 later i got a new clutch and new clutch master cylinder...so if u think ur clutch is going get it checked out so ur not stuck in ur driveway with a bad clutch and ur late for work:wink:
