How to install a short shifter???
 

Hey, I was trying to install my new short shifter today, and I got everything off except for the 2 bolts on the plate that holds the shifter ball. I couldn't get them off. Can someone please give me a link, or some info on this please. I think that I just might wait and buy all new hardware as well, but I just wanna get the damn thing installed. And, I was supposed to pick up my G/F from work at 3pm, but I thought it was 5pm, so she got all upset at me, I rushed connecting the stock shifter, and now, it's in backwards!!! That is really getting anoying, so some info would be great!

you took off the whole linkage right?
if you have its much easier to attack those 2 bolts.
to take those 2 bolts out, i had to use a vice grip and clamp it, b-cuz the bolts were pretty rusted and siezed. so if you haven't notticed, when you turn, the flat side, sorta comes out a bit. just take a vice grip and clamp it on to the flat side and take a normal 10 mm i bleieve it was to take off the bolt. once the bolt is off, pending on what company you have of your short shifter, you might need to take off the stock boot covering. (its the black piece wehre the ball of the shifter is in.) once you have taken that apart you pretty much do it in the reverse order. and i highly recommand when putting the shifter back up to sit in the cabin to see if you've installed it right. i installed a duel bend, and if you hvae a duel bend, you dont want it to be turned the other way otherwise it'll look like your in gear already. it'll just look funny. hard to explain. but yeah, other than those 2 bolts, you shouldn't have any problems. let me knwo if you still need info.

yeah, I'm going to get those bolts next time, thats all I needed, so I'll be set for next weekend

hey check out g2ic.com's "teg tips"...there's instructions on there that are very informative and has pictures too! The tegs and civics are all the same with installing a short shifter....that's the set of instructions nautica_t and I used to install ours. Like nautica t said...its a bitch to get those two bolts off!!! Vice grip it like a gorilla!

You know what the trick is, I have installed lots and on the last one I did I figured it out. I used to use vice grips but you dont need to. If you remove the housing, the two carrage bolts that hold the shifter in place have wrench flats on them. Because they are carrage bolts, you dont think so but a 12mm wrench fits perfectly on the flats, it is a three minute job to change after that. Try it i bet it works

Yeah, I was working on those 2 bolts, I knew I was doing it right, it's just that those bolts are pretty rusted, and I was already 4hrs late picking up my G/F, which I never did obvesiously, so I just put it back together, I have to work Mon and tue, so I'll get at it Wed. I hate having a time limit when I'm working on my car, nothing ever goes as planned.

i hope you got the bushing as well not sure how old your car is but i changed them on mine. Like scott sait the 12mm worked good for me :thumbup: Another little tip to have everything running nice and smooth i covered all moving parts with white grease, some red line syntetic mtl tranny fluid and your shifting is like silk. This is such a big diffrence i find it hard to drive when i drive another standard car with stock shifter it takes forever to shift, the throws are so long definetly one of the best upgrades you can make to enjoy driving your car more:yummy:
