How the hell??? and how bad is it??

This is thread is in a bunch of parts, so here goes....

So the last couple of days i've been noticing a noise, ...a creaking sound everytime i accelerated from a dead stop and sometimes when braking from the front passenger corner...

I've been busy as hell so today when i got home i finally tried to troubleshoot and figure out what was wrong... i'm looking around and one of my lug nuts is gone!

The reason it really gets me is that the last time i put them on i put them on with an impact wrench and i double checked them and I can barely take them off by hand with a tire iron after using this wrench... how the heck would it fall off?

the second part is how bad is it to drive with only 3 lug nuts for a few days? i'm sure i've been doing it for a few days already.... for the mean while i put my oem lug minus the washer in place but i really don't know if it is going ot hold as tight as the tuner lugs.... i won't have time to pick up a new lug nut until tuesday evening at the earliest... (and does anyone know if it's possible to buy just ONE ? I don't need a whole new set of luck nuts... GRRRRRRR)

This happen to me before, i think someone was trying to steal my rim and he broke the stud but i was driving only 3 nuts for a week and nothing happen to me, but i would recommend you fix it asap. you just need the nut rite? the stud is fine?

Whiplash 17-Jul-2005 08:54 PM

i drove for a couple of months with a broken stud on two of my rims Alex.. (when those shytty Spoon studs had to be busted/drilled/cut off cuz they were spinning...)

NOT recommended, but ya got's ta do what ya got's ta do..

i have a few Kyokugens kicking around.......

Whiplash 17-Jul-2005 08:55 PM

and ya, no way it fell off...

imported_SaYjAiBaO 18-Jul-2005 12:17 AM

same thing happened to me yesterday but they didnt fall off. two of them came loose and was about to fall off! the vibration got louder and louder until i couldnt take it anymore. i first i thought i warped my disc cuz i braked so hard on a turn. i thought my disc was going to fly off or something. then i check my lug nuts and had the same problem as you. i too thought someone tried jacking my rims and got lazy or something.

sum1 tried to jack your sh!t y0

1. check your stud carefully
2. I have spare lugs like marty
3. unlikely it just flew off
4. it's perfectly ok to drive on 3 nuts, just don't tear around
5. OEM lugs are NOT meant to work with aftermarket wheels (acorn shape vs. straight taper)

imported_italstallion 18-Jul-2005 10:23 AM

i have oem lugs on my aftermarket rims wuts wrong with that?

Nova_Dust 18-Jul-2005 10:43 AM

I stripped my Rays the other day. One wrong troque and you can feel the difference.

Anyway, someone might have done something to it.

cibs 18-Jul-2005 10:53 AM

so should i take that OEM one off?? i just have alot of driving to do today

Nova_Dust 18-Jul-2005 10:55 AM

OEM is fine, 4 lugs are still better than 3.

OEM lugs have a different shape than aftermarket ones.

There's a lot wrong with that. It means that you lugs may not seat properly on to the rim.

imported_EM1Turbo 18-Jul-2005 11:18 AM

someone tried to jack my rims and took off 2 lugs.

I didnt notice for a day or 2.

imported_JookSingKid 18-Jul-2005 11:44 AM

IMHO

Put the 4th OEM one on.

civicnation 18-Jul-2005 11:56 AM

you can probably granny drive on 3 lugs, but make sure they are tight. Just grab a 4th one form a local garage i'm sure they would just give it to you for free.

civicnation 18-Jul-2005 11:57 AM

i have a few lying around so give me a shout if you want one

cibs 18-Jul-2005 12:41 PM

I have locks, so i would like to find a nut that matches my keys... i don't particularly want to have 3 keys for all my rims... :(

punkindrublic 18-Jul-2005 02:46 PM

you know whats funny? when somebody attempts to steal my rims... ya the ****ty ones... and i'm driving down my road and the wheel starts wobbling really bad and then as i'm slowing down to inspec the drivers side front wheel just falls off and i see it rolling down my street. that was me just over a week ago

When you use an impact wrench on your lugs, there's a high chance you could over-torque them, leading to stripped the stems. Although whenver I tighten wheels (on the car, and at the shop at school), I use a impact wrench, it's smarter to torque them to spec so they don't strip. So maybe you just over-torqued them with the impact wrench.

They still would not fall off due to overtorquing the nuts.
