Unburnt fuel passing through an excessively hot exhaust system. The hot exhaust ignites the fuel. You might not get actual flames if there isn't that much unburnt fuel, you might just get a slight ping sound or backfire.

so if you have an excessively hot exhaust with an untuned fuel pressure regulator, then there is a higher chance of it? does it matter if the engine is well tuned? i mean would a pretty much done up engine help? since a lot of race cars does spit flames and i assume those engine are well tuned.

thanks

Well some guys have various fuel and ignition controllers which they can adjust to make it spit crazy flames whenever they want...

Is this something you wanna be able to do?

no, but i wouldn't mind! just want to know why it does that, that's all. anyway, having a d16xxx spit fire??? that's a waste of money, expecially with the gas prices in TO right now, i rather save that fuel and have them burn in the engine.

thanks jug for your explaination

Yeah burning all the fuel you have is a good idea

Anyways... what alot of guys do (and hollywood specal effects crews) is install a sparkpulg into the muffler close to the tip and they have a wire connected to either a high voltage supply or a tapping into the distrubutor cap... So when the run their engines a little rick it spits out unburnt fuel that is then ignited by the sparkplug in the mufller.... I was gonna install one just for kicks but then decided not to ...

Check out this link for more info about shooting flames from your car also has lots of kewl videos.... http://www.hotrodsetc.net/menu.html Enjoy!!

if i were to do it, i prefer the non-special effect way. it's for my own enjoyment more than putting on a show.

OcTaNeTeDdY, that's a great site though, thanks! maybe i'll try something on my mom's car.

Kay man dont even bother trying the whole sprk plug thing in the muffler, a side to that is the fact that some times there is a chance where th flames will back fire and thats not something you want for one, number two the flames shout out a good 5 to 6 feet which i way too far and dangerous. You can buy a muffler from the states for about 80 USD and it will do the same thing for you with the uch of a button from inside your car and you can turn it on and off.

In my olden Domestic days there were guys in my Camaro club that would have fuel adjustment systems.

They could make the fuel going into the motor really REALLY rich.. Not all of it would be burn so they'd like the car idle for a lil bit... then they'd tap the gas and press a button which would ignite a spark plug drilled into the back of their exhaust causing the whole flame effect.

Kinda neat, expensive and it CAN'T be that good for the motor.

Regards,
OK
