Question How do you tell if your burning oil?

as the title reads... I have a 4th gen Si with a 5th gen Si engine and a couple of days ago the oil light came on when i was either cornering hard or braking hard. There is no oil dripping from the car and there is no visible sign of oil burning out of the back of the exhaust. I know that if oil is burning there is usually residue. I had the engine swapped 3000km ago and I would only presume that new oil was put in at the time. I added some oil today but will be changing over the weekend. could the engine be burning oil or is it normal for it to evaporate? I know with my old engine I never had that problem. Any ideas? Thanks.

check oil level. it could be ur valve seals going and ur engine is consuming oil. it wouldnt smoke or anything if it is ur valve seals. if u are smoking and u can see blue smoke and all...HAHA nice bottom end

If the engine is not leaking moderately or severely, and your oil level goes down frequently, it's burning oil. As Shaun said, you may not notice the blue smoke out of the exhaust. If you checked the exhaust yourself, then the engine was idling. The rpm's are much lower at idle, therefore there's not as much oil pressure. IMO, since you stated that there were no drops of oil under the car, it's probably burning it at higher rpm's while your driving... and if there is blue smoke coming out of the exhaust, you're not noticing it because you can't see it while you're driving.

BTW, regarding the motor swap... do you know if it sat around for a while before you got it? It's possible that the seals may have dried out while it was not in use.

bah valve seals are prolly 40 bucks. labour will cost u. it requires removing the head and taking out ur old valve seals and putting in new ones(removing all 16 valves). but i doubt that ur seals having been dried up from sitting around is the case...because my zc had to have sat in the shop i got it from for like 10 years. and it didnt consume any oil...mind u, i blew it instead.

As a tip, you should check you oil level everytime you gas up.

If you have a VTEC motor, and you're reving it alot, be cautioned, VTEC has been known to consume some oil

This is very interesting and is probably the answer!! My VTEC is hooked up with a switch so when ever I am at full throttle VTEC will come on. So if I floor it from 0 my VTEC is on and probably eating my oil. Lets hope this is it. Ken wll probably confirm this. Thanks JSK
