How do you know when is the time to change your muffler?

My muffler has 95000 on it, since the first day. How long usually does it last and under what circumstances do you have to change it? When people say "muffler is shot" what does it mean? Like it is rusted with a hole in it?

Thanks

well you can only tell by getting out of the car and looking yourself.

Its pretty common sense but get out of the car, stick your head in the rear near the muffler and look/smell for exhaust coming out, put your hand around places it sounds like it might be comign out and feel for heat, dont burn yourself though

Any sort of hole in the outer skin of your muffler indicates that it needs replacement. In other words, yours is prolly fine. I still have my original one.

I see, I was looking at it and other then the usual welding spot rust here and there, it is alright.

Money can be spent at better things.

if you want, get a stick and poke it around gently inside the tail pipe. If the screening there that holds the baffling back is strong and intact, it means your muffler is in good shape.

If you poke through the screening, it means its on it way out and you should be looking to replace it.

The muffler can also rust from the top down, so you may not be able to see any holes from a visual expection.

With the car idling, look underneath and inspect for any exhaust leaks.

has you muffler gotten louder recently?

mmm... I don't think the noise level has increased, yet. Most of it is from the SRI, but the muffler doesn't sound crispy, like it is sorta deep (if I go full throttle) but in a way kinda farty if you know what I mean. I haven't really examined but I will get to it this afternoon/evening.

heh...mine needs a replacement for sure...i bottom out so often i must have put at least one hold in it...and it does a gay fart sound that pisses me off and on top of that it sounds like something is inside it like metal and is just bouncing around in it. maybe inside my resonator

Agreed lol, tho when it starts to rattle and sound strange, you should be looking for a new one.
