Talking How do you clean an air filter?

Hi.
I have an Intake and a Filter which both I'm kindda happy with. The filter itself isn't the best design but heck; I don't wanna buy a new one for now. Now I tried to clean the filter (which I have for say... 2 years now) several times by vacuming the outside of it which really doesn't help much. I can kindda see that the fiber or paper or what ever it is has turned dark, from the bright red it used to be and I know I have to wash or "recharge" it somehow. I am aware of the K&N recharger kit, but for the price, I could get a new filter.

Now my question is, is there a way to clean the filter nice and throughly, with the stuff that you find around the house?

Thanks.
