how to check used tranny

Hi everybody, i bought a used SI tranny from a guy who was working in Defcon Racing last July. I finished all parts collection and finished the auto to manual conversion yesterday. However, after i started the car up, the tranny was running noisey even in neutral. Noise gone after I press clutch. So it should be bad bearings in tranny then.... :(

I'm debating if i should rebuild the tranny or go for another used one. If I go for another used one, how can i know if the tranny is good? Some sellers may not tell me the truth. Please help, i feel tired to take off the tranny again.

Did you change the throwout bearing?

imported_vizeta 30-May-2005 04:06 PM

I did, i installed brand new OEM clutch pkg with throwout bearing. if the problem is from throwout bearing, the noise should be even louder when i press clutch.

Thank you very much guys. I'll bring it to Mister Transmission for quote coz I cannot afford long downtime. i really hope it's all becoz of input bearing, not the bearings on countershaft too...

punkindrublic 30-May-2005 10:48 PM

if you have a d series engine. it would be cheaper to get another tranny... but then i suppose you could end up in the same spot...

on my old dx tranny i was rockin for a bit the input shaft bearing disintigrated and all the tranny fluid covered the clutch and flywheel and oozed out :p

true mr tranny wants 380$ just to swap a tranny for another one hA!! rip off

imported_vizeta 31-May-2005 12:03 AM

I'll check how much they want tomorrow. if it's under $200, i'll let it go. otherwise, u guys ar correct. I should take another tranny. But again, how can u tell if the used tranny is good.

imported_vizeta 01-Jun-2005 12:03 AM

problem found. it's becoz of bad ISB. I'm gonna call Defcon Racing for parts money. Becareful to buy anything from them, or the guy called SixPak on clubsi.com
