How bad is it to grind gears??
I've been falling into the bad habit of grinding third gear because i just dont push the clutch down long enough. Just wondering how much damage is done to the tranny when you grind the gears? I'm not forcing it into gear or anything when it starts grinding. I just back it off, curse at myself, and repeat the shift again making sure to hold the clutch longer. It's weird though, because i never used to grind gears but starting this summer i'm doing it more and more often...

good question cuz i do the same sometimes, and yeah usually from second to third or first to second, i slack off and don't use the clutch right and then you feel really stupid esp if you're in a parking lot and all, cuz it's real loud when people are around you can hear it down the street!
but I'd rather have my gears grind every once in a while than be driving an auto!

grinding everyone does now and then, slow or fast shift you might grind. over time the teeth on the gears get worth down, syncros are off...the gear might even pop out when u are moving at low rpms. best to not get lazy and put the clutch all the way down or you'll find yourself replacing or driving around with grinding whether you want to or not...i've learnt my lesson.

I used to drive an auto and you know those auto cars you can put it in reverse though the car's still moving forward ... (when you're parking for example) ... now on my manual i do it a couple time due to habit and i grind big time ....
so for manual i guess you have to stop completely before you can put it to reverse .... but it's not the case for going forward though, since you can be moving back and you can still put it into gear. any thoughts?

I have the same problem...I grind the gears shifting into 3rd gear as well...I hears that it may not be your shifting but the pressure plate may be wearing down as well...do you have problems putting it into 1st gear as well even when the ca is stopped?..if that is the case it may be the pressure plate but hey that's only what I heard so not 100% sure...

tricks for tranny
iF
1st gear doesn't engage
just let the clutch up in neutral and press it again gear will go in very smooth without forcing it.
rEVERSE
if it doesn't want to go in or grinds thats because you have not properly set it up for the gear. honda has some stuff so you don't accidentally shift into reverse while moving.
all you have to do is put gear into first then move it back to reverse should go in perfect without any grinding
