HONDA GURUs WANTED. PLEASE HELP!

Hey guys recently my 1996 honda civic Si non-ABS, Manual(you will know why i am giving you this info later on...)

...started giving me problems.

188,000kms on it as of now.

My car is lowered but not that much. i got the legal limit of two finger spaces between wheel walls and tires.

i always had my car this low with no problems.

but recently after i put my close to bald tires from the front to the back(front tires now being brand new tires) i heard knocking noises.

Everytime i turn my steering wheel a 1/4 turn and accelerate my car makes noises(knocking and clicking) from under the hood where the engine/transmission is and strong enough for me to feel them on the pedals.

But today i realized that this problem does end there the clicking even starts when my car is going straight and steering wheel is straight when i let go of the gas (only at certain RPMs).

Is this car gonna break down on me soon?

i was told they were drive shafts.

Anyone here had this problem?

How did you fix this?

How much it cost as well as where you got it done?

Will this problem get really bad, where it will break done and do even more damage?

Thanks guys all help is much APPRIECIATED.

First things first, did you tighten the lug nuts properly? Make sure they are tightened very well.

it sound like you boots are torn

this happened to me once and yeah you need new drive shaft for sure if its making a knocking when you turn. its not something that needs to be fix immediatly however it is a little dangerous like that.

does it make a sound when turn left and right.. you may only have to change one axel. to fix this it costed me just over 400 dollars.

nah, you can get axels for under 100 a pop. just dont go to places like midas and crappy tire, and you'll be fine..
diy is always good too...axels are cheap.

things i'd check: tighten down your lugs again....check them to make sure they are solid

if they are, get your head under the car where your CV boots are, see if they are torn (you may not be able to see if there is a splt, so run your hand all around it)

if there is, you've lost the oil in there, and it's time for new axels. (or at least that one)

Lets keep it at finding out what is wrong with your car, this is not a shopping forum for best places (as per the rules), if you want to look at places for parts, check the affiliates page, otherwise this thread will be done.

thanks

get under your car and check. i'd double check those lugs.....tigten them down accross from each other (not 1 by 1 in a circle)

sometimes when you tighten one, it makes another kinda a touch loose. crank em down.

if it STILL happens, side your head under where your cv boots are on your axel, and see if there are any tears in the boot (as i said, you may not be able to SEE them).

could be your CV joint, do a visual check on it... it could also be your tie-rod, or ball joint.

keep us posted with the progress.

okay if CV boots are the rubber like containers in which grease is stored then i would have to say i'm F'ed...

i just looked under and its ripped..its dry...

and i just recall seeing this oil supbstance on my rims and it ran all the way down to my tires..i had no idea it came from the CV boot..but i'm sure my CV boot is screwed and i will need new drive shafts.

was wondering if my CV boot is ripped can i just change that instead of the whole drive shaft assembly???

let me know

thanks everyone for your input and advice.

get complete cv shafts they r cheap & if u drove with it ripped you have already subjected the joints to excessive wear

yeah. once dirt and dust get in there, and esp this time of year with road salt. getting those cv's fixed/filled isnt worth it. the damage is already done.

it's pretty much the same price to get new (or, "refurbed") ones as it would be to try and fix what you have.....and to fix what you have (road salt/dirt) isnt guaranteed.

u can find "refurb/rebuilt" axels for cheap. check the affiliates or call around. $100ish area a pop.

this blows...so i will need to change the drive shafts...was wondering if the drive shafts come in a coplete kit or do they come in individual pieces from which you can pick out.

how does it work.

anyone bought anything from our affiliates concerning driveshaft?

give me your feedback on who did the best job.

thanks

Russ

just go to a wrecker/junkyard to get the whole driveshaft assembly, it shouldn't cost you more than $160 for the set.

got my used drive shaft off some guy on this board. now the question is how do i know if its worth putting it in my car. how do i know if they are in good condition?

what should i look out for?

i just don't want to put them in to find something is wrong with them and have to pay for 2 labour jobs when i could have done it in one.

Thanks again for everyone's help.

Glad this site EXISTED!!!

do a visual inspection on it...

the teeth on the shaft, check if they are banged up, any cracks, are they warped, etc...
condition of the boot, check if there are any tears, cracks, oil leaks, etc...

also, finding out a little bit of history and info about the car it came off from, this should help with your decision. like for example, how much km's has it seen, was the car it came off from been treated well, was it taken off roading in the boonies, was it in a front end collision, etc...

g'd luck!
