Honda Gearboxes

I just ran over to home hardware and on the way back i was really enjoying my 1st to 2nd shifts. You know the ones where you get that meaty mechanical feeling as the shifter slides smoothly into please. So, i've always heard that Honda has some of the best gearboxes going. But do they? I've never driven any standard but a Honda for a significant period of time.

Have You?

oh ya i guess in your beater it would be

i've fudged two trannies already... i dont think they are good at spirited driving as much as i give it.... the engine though i must say i'm impressed with... 304 000 kms and still going as strong as when i bought it 3.5 years ago

absolutely the smoothest

I've driven many many.... many stick cars, and I can tell you staight up, NONE have ever felt as positive as a Honda. Not so much the Civic, but the Integra Type R, the Prelude H22s, and though I've never driven one, but I've rowed through the gears... the S2000.

Some RWD cars with manny trannys also feel pretty decent, but for a FWD car with a stick... there is absolutely NOTHING out there that can compare to a Honda.

being a mechanic I've driven my share. I like the crisp click into gear kinda feel.

S2000, TSX, STI, NSX, too many cars to name.

guy who does our tranny work has a B&M shifter installed on his S10 feels great I want mine to be like that. very crisp feel.

go drive a vw..speifically the older ones..say pre 02.. yukkkkkk.
long vague throws.. that with the delay in the throttle response...made me not a fan of the car(in that regard)
they have gotten better though.

i would have to agree with you guys about the shifter feeling

esp if you have spruced up the linkages with some new bushings and some lube..

I have also heard on some other boards of using a stiffer 'u joint' that has to be welded onto the shift linkage where it attaches to the tranny. this way there is absolutely no slack in the shifter at all

lol my tranny is a champ, its at like 310,000 maybe a bit more, engine was rebuilt by previous owner, but he said the tranny and clutch are original, it still grabs like crazy to, good thing this guy knew how to drive.

Newer Sunfire's have a decent feel, but Im no Honda expert.

Ive also driven my friends 90 Mustang 5.0 and that things gearbox was messed, very sloppy.
