hmmm, headgasket?

heres the thing, i posted a while back about the bog my car has where it would just chug along and sputter and fart...lol...well, i noticed that my coolant level seems to drop quite quickly and i know there is a small leak where the clamp and hose connect to the rad but when my car bogs i noticed that i can sometimes smell coolant...like the sweet smell...is it possible that my headgasket needs replacing (no oil in the coolant though) and that the fact that coolant is getting in my engine might cause it to bog down and sound like its miss firing or something?

Check your oil and see if it looks contaminated. If it does you probably have a leak that is localized between and oil passage and the water jacket . That would explain the loss of coolant and would result in a leak that would not be as noticeable as one that leaks coolant into the cylinder.

and what does the contaminated oil look like? i just got an oil change today so i will have to wait a lil bit to check that out....does anyone know though if this can contribute to the bogging? or what it might be? like can an engine running rich bog down sometimes, then wait a few days then bog down constantly again for like 5 hours? or should i check the O2 sensors and stuff?

The best way I can described contaminated oil is frothy chocolate milk. The coolant in the combustion chamber can definitely contribute to the bog because its part water. Unless a car has been tuned water injection, the water/coolant will hinder the combustion.

If your O2 sensor were gone, you'd notice a noticeable decrease in gas mileage from running rich all the time. There are other symptoms but at 5 am and no sleep I can't think of any.

the oil is rarely what gets contaminated, whats higher coolant pressure or oil pressure?

anyways, your probably just smelling the burning coolant on your rad (i have the same problem) the b-series hose are larger than the stock rad so they have to be clamped down with two clamps (or try a t-bolt clamp) after you fix the leak wash/wipe the rad down nice and the smell should go away john

but just incase pull those plugs and check if they are white (burning coolant)

^^^^good advice and pretty much what i was going to say.

A good sign of a cooked headgasket is your coolant overflow bottle boiling over, crappy compression, and of course bright white tipped spark plugs (a sign of burning coolant).

john.. thats not good at all..who did the compression test? i would try it again.. if it was 135 for 3 cylinders it would have a very tough time even starting..

lol no man.. 165-180 is what they normally go for. Mine ranked 180 across the board.. anything below 155 is pretty much on its way out
