Question High RPM Torque

Ok, so when I put the pedal to the floor or close to it, i'll accelerate slowly but once I hit 4000 rpm it "launches" and I pick up speed much better. now i'm use to driving a 2001 explorer sport which has nice torque. so my question is, is there something wrong, or is it that the little engine has no torque up until that rpm range? it's a d15b7.

thanks

Mine picks up at 5200, but that's when VTEC kicks in with my D-Series
