high-pitched whining from engine

My 2001 civic is making a high-pitched whining noise. At first it was just when the engine was very cold, but now it is lasting longer. The noise is right in sync with the engine revs, so it must be something right on the engine.

My shop says it COULD be the timing belt, but they really don't know for sure, and say they should change it anyways, since it's never been done and the car is almost at 130.

But i'm not sure that it's what is causing the whining so I thought I'd ask here in case anyone else has had the same problem.. Anyone know what it might be?

THanks!

Is it not one of the belts? ie Power steering belt, something like that? It sounds a lot like that might be the problem

It may just need to be tightened or perhaps replaced.

Does it sound like a really loud bird chirping?

Having said that, you might also want to replace the timing belt and water pump. That should normally be done at 100KM.

I once had a whistling noise that was the little box that the PCV leads to. It was blocked solid causing pressure to build up.

if its not the power steering belt it might be your power steering pump. or water pump.

Could be Belt squeaks, could be water pump bearing dying.

not hard to tell, you can test the belts. If they are tight and the sound is still coming from that area, most likely your waterpump. If it is your WP, you better get that **** replaced soon before it seizes up, snaps your timing belt and potentially destroys your engine.

whoa, now that I think about it, my car has a high pitched whining noise that isn't a belt.

MIght be a bearing??? Oh man. But the water pump was replaced not too long ago...
