HELP: tires are getting eaten BAD!!!
currently i am drving a 96 civic coupe
my driver side tire is getttin eaten real bad with abt less than 8K on the tires i can see the metal wires sticking out .. the pass side does it too but not as much as the driver side im guessin cuz its lowered but the driver side is getting eaten a lot .. my car is lowered with the ****ty coilovers thats how the car came.. welll i really dont know how to fix the problem cuz even when i raised my car in the winter it was eating away the tire then as well.. . i also remmeber some people mentioning that they used washers instead of a camber kit how does that work..??? if some one can help me out that would be great. also would changing the upper or lower ball joints fix the problem.. ?? |
get an alignment. your toe and camber is probably way off.

get an alignment, camber kit on the front and for the rears get the longer bolts and put washers in.. |
you cant put washers in the front like rob said.
you will need to buy a camber kit the rear you can put in longer bolts and some washers. the only way to fix this problem is to throw away those cheap coilover's and get springs with a pre-set hight. imo i would go with 1.75 drop from any of the sport versions availbe thru eibach, neuspeed, h&r etc... that way you dont have to buy camber kit. |
Washer trick only works for the rear tires and ball joints wont fix anything.
Best way to fix the problem is get rid of those cheap sleeves and replace them with either oem springs or lowering springs with a small drop. 10- 20 dollars for used oem or 100-250 for lowering springs The other option is keep the setup and buy a camber kit . I woul not suggest this cause those cheap sleeve will kill your shocks within a year. camber kit 190- 250 shocks 500 If you have a lot of money then you could buy a nice setup for about 1000 - the sky is the limit. |
camber should not be eating tires like that, that is a toe issue. Your toe is likely way out of spec.
Whenever your lower or raise a car, get an alignment or toe will eat your tires. |
it might be the shocks that need to be replaced. i had that problem, the tires were gone after like 7 or 8 months, and they were brand new. after i changed to tokicos, they are way better, only camber wears, but now fixed with ingalls.

Now I don t claim to no very much but after I lowered my car the tires wore on the inside very quickly. This was because they would sit on and angle like soo / \ ( negative camber ) instead of straight l l. Now I always understood this situation was cause by camber am I wrong ? What is Toe ?
If this is the issue EK Coupe is having, the problem could be solved with a camber kit however I do suggest geeting rid of those sleeve regardless. |

Toe is the way the wheels "point" when viewed from above. When you change suspension components, the toe usually gets messed up.

^^^ yup and toe is constantly "scrubbing" the tire since they are angled wrong, therfore using more rubber then needed. It significantly wears tires.
camber wear is when the tire is angled / and only the 1 or 2" area that is touching the road is worn. So if only the edge of the tires 1" or 2" is worn then camber. If the tires is bald as a mother****er, its toe. lowered about 1.75-2" should not give so much negative camber to wear tires that fast, in fact should be no where near it. but if toe was off, it could easily chew through a set of tires that fast. |
Having a little toe in will help the car going straight and break better. Having toe out will help the car corner, i.e. drifting.
-2.5 degree of camber is acceptable. |
thank you to all with the feedback so when i get the alignment done, im guessing that takes car of the toe. another thing was which of the bolts from the rear do i replace with the longer ones with washers...
