HELP - Rear brakes weird noise
 

Ok well this started about 2 weeks ago.
to make a long story short.. my cars been in the garage. i went to investigate the noise... wheel lock key snapped. ordered a new one. came in today. snapped that one right away.
spent 3 hours today tryin to drill the stud out. got it with my dads help.
now this noise is like a loud clicking from the brake drum
btw its a 92 cx hatch with rear drums
we came to the conclusion it was the adjuster because while the drum is off.. we stepped slowly on the brakes.. and the shoes just barely came out. wheel cyclinder works fine and all. the shoes just hit their limit on the adjuster.
so we adjusted. re-punched a new stud in the spindle. put the spindle back on
wheel goes back on. i take it out.. step on the brakes. and bam it still makes the noise
its too hot outside to take it apart again

so im just wondering has anyone gotten that too?
brand new drum.. brand new shoes.. maybe the starwheel on the adjuster is work out? i have no idea.

I get a noise when im braking from the back also and i got drums also on my 96 civic. Is your noise a clunking sound when your slowing down to a stop? It only happens when i hold the brake for a bit when im stopping. I was thnking of going to check that out but i want to see what ppl have to say about that on here maybe i can fix or change what it could be.

yeah like say im comin from a stop from 40kph. i can push my brake pedal down about 1/4 of the way and no noise.. but after that. its just when force gets put on them and coming to the complete stop. it makes a loud chunking clicking noise

so throw new shoes and drums on it :shrugs:

you said they are toast so obviously this is an issue take it apart fix is right adn your problem will either come to light or you will fix it

did you put your bearing holder's in the rear when you re installed it..?? they being those little peices of metal that hold the bearing in coudl be hubs clunking around

coudl be not adjusted right aswell adjust them tighter cause if they are too loose then they will grab hard and clunk but be fine with lite braking

take your adjuster apart and use a wire wheel, or a wire brush and clean the adjuster all up and then put antiseize on the threads and put it back together

just clean everything back up.. and put it back together. Drums are a breeze.

Not saying this is your problem but, I've ran into the clicking noise a few times with new shoes on.
Grab some coarse sandpaper and round off the sharp edges off the top and bottom of the friction material of the 4 shoes.
Hopefully that's all it is and your noise should be gone.

i have a strong feeling its the star wheel and adjuster
tmr when im at work im gonna put it up on the hoist and put on a new adjuster. Crappy Tire is fun... half price for things for me :)

but im hoping thats it
cuz if braking lightly its fine. just when the pedal goes about half way down the drum goes all clunky.


i really wanna make it to CSCS this weekend.

Exact Same problem as me. It happened recently after I changed the drums though. I was thinking its because I didn't change the shoes with the drums so they aren't worn evenly to match the inside surface of the drum that the shoes are rubbing on.

i changed my shows. then prolly 2 weeks later did the drums
so it cant be that bad
i picked up a new adjuster and hardware
once i get them on

ok guys i fixed it
it wasnt the adjuster.. but i needed a new one neways.
ended up being a ****ty drum. warped.
took it to my work. and one of the old mechanics helped me out
put it on the hoist... took drum off.. put the drum on a lathe sorta thing. ended up being warped on the inside.
i was only judgin warpness from outside
so replaced the drum
took the car out to check it
thing is perfect now
