help! installation spring and shock question
 

Hello everyone,
I just recently bought new coilover springs, and new gas shocks for my 93 civic dx. My mechanic is about to install them, but he said he has a problem that the shock has a lip on it, and he is afraid when the coilover sits down on it with the weight of the car, that it will snap off....I wasnt expecting a problem like this. I'm not a mechanic or anything....this is what my mechanic is telling me. When I bought the parts, the shocks said they were SPECIFICALLY made for lowered civics. Has anyone had install problems like this? If so is there a way to go around it? please help!!! thanks!!
btw. the shocks are dropzone, and the springs are Matrix. (I bought them seperatly)

Logic tells me that the force applied on to the perch would be the same for a spring or coilover sleeve. I haven't owned coilover sleeves, though, so I'm not really sure. Nor am I familiar with Drop Zone and Matrix products. I would have to think that the load would be dispersed the same and if the shock can handle the weight of your car and the spring rates then it souldn't matter because the weight will be transferred to the perch no matter what. Whether the load is transferred through a spring or through a spring and onto the coilover, it's still going to hit the perch.

that is the link for the shocks...the springs I shouldnt need a pic because they are all relativley the same...it is the shock that is giving me the apparant problem.

whats this lip you talk of? those shokcs look fine

well the coilover sleeve fits over the shock and sits on the lip which is the flared out part (i'm assuming from what my mechanic told me) he is afraid the pressure from the weight of the car from the coilover being on top of the flared part will break.

You mean the spring perch? The round flat part that's about half way up the shock? I say install them and drive; the seller on e-bay says they offer alifetime warranty...so...

I'm sure other people have used drop zone shocks and not had the perch crack off.

I just talked to my mechanic again...and he says that the coilover doesnt fit all the way down onto the shock. This means that when i hit a bump, if the coilover isnt tight enough around the shock , the car will actually lower itself, making it extremely unsafe....so the main problem is that the coilover is not going all the way down onto the shock...it sits about 1/2 inch above the perch line.
any suggestions or solutions?

I don't know what to tell you. I think you might be SOL.

What you are describing is typical of sleeves. This is why COILOVERS IN THE SLEEVE FORM SUCK!. Anyone can debate this with me all day but the only proper way to lower a car is through a spring and strut set or true coilovers. What you have is what everyone runs when the have a set of coilover sleeves. It will put wear on the struts and sleeves but this is normall for that set-up. Sleeve coilovers are not a progressive rate therefore the ride SUCKS. You also tend to bottom out the struts no matter what kind of struts you have they will eventually blow. No flaming just my 0.02's

Or get the Ground Control coilover sleeves that are designed to mate with specific shocks. I think they are available to mate with Illuminas, AGX's, and Koni Yellows.

maybe you have the wrong one

I havn't had a problem mounting the cheap R1 coilover sleeves on stock shocks at all, they fit right into slot, and stay there in place with the provided rubber washers

i have skink 2 coilovers and mine just sit right in there it said in the instructions thats its a good idea 2 weld the threaded part 2 the shock so it dosent turn but the shock is steal and the threaded pipe is some sort of aluminum so i couldent weld it and i havnot had any problems besides wen u want 2 move the shock its hard 2 release the 2 nuts because the whole thing turns round in the lip :)

I just installed ground controls... no Issues no movement at all...
