Help: Idle problem?

1995-civic-coupe-5spd, 130k

A few days ago, I started my car, sat for about a 1 min, and started driving. I drove about 30 seconds before I hit the first stop sign, and my idle just started going up and down from around 3000rpms to 1000rpms, up and down constantly. Even if i gave it gas it would still do the same thing once the idle came down. The problem occurs even when my car is near proper operating temparature. This problem seems to continue until about 10-15min of driving then it goes away. Driving is fine, the problem is only at idle.

The only other thing I noticed, is that even with my engine at proper operating temperature, I'm not gettin any hot air from my heater, until i'm constantly driving, and when I do stop for a traffic signal or sign, cold air will start blowing through instead of heat.

Has anyone ever had the problem of your thermostat sticking from open and close intermittently which caused your idle to idle funny?

or should I treat these as too separate problems?

I have the same sort of heating problem, i replaced my thermostat last week and it didnt change... It doesnt sound as sever, like i dont get cold air when i stop, i just see my temp guage dropp only when its real cold out tho, and then when im driving it goes up again... I thyought thermostat forsure, but itt didnt help too much... the air is just warmer now cuz i put a hotter stat in...

you have a coolant leak, and you are low on coolant

I flushed my whole cooling system, and its definatly not low, definatly not leaking... ive checked that over a billion times

Maybe steem is excapeing from one of those pinch style hose clamps, i hate those things (was the culprit for my vacume leak) I think im gonna change them all over to the adjustable hose clamps...

yah thats a good article for the idle problem, but it doesnt sove the heat. Thats what u ment right?

bbarbulo 16-Feb-2004 12:27 PM

2 things... did you have the heater turned to FULL HEAT when you were flushing your coolant system?? Did you open the bleeder valve to let air pockets out of the cooling system.

imported_BoOsTd 16-Feb-2004 12:31 PM

no bleeder on the d16 right? yah heater wide open... I squeezed the top rad hose whih the car idleing to release the bubbles...

with the rad cap off

imported_gatherer 16-Feb-2004 12:42 PM

there should be a bleeder... there's one on my d15b7 .....and it's on the block near where the top rad hose connects...

imported_BoOsTd 16-Feb-2004 12:45 PM

idle is what i was refering to .

as far as heat , theres a lot of things to look at ; coolant, thermostat: heater core.

idle is more importnat for your engine now then heater is ..

fix one problem at a time.
