Help.. Grinding Creeking at slow stop only

Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on my problem.
The problem is if I am going really slow and apply the brakes, a weird grinding sound is occuring.
Sounds like SPrings on a bad bed.

I was thinking ball joints? but Wasnt sure if upper or lower. I tried to check and none look loose when a pry bar.

I was thinking maybe that rotor is bad?

Whenever I normally brake.. no problem.

This only happens if say.. I was in the TIM HORTON drive thru I can really hear it loud.

It is really hard to hear.. I normally only hear it late (when its quiet outside) or at a drive thru.

I tried turning wheel right and left at a stop.. and no noise.. I tried braking at a fast speed.. and no noise.. only if I am goign like 15 km or under

Please help.

rear brakes...

imported_Joe_98Si 24-May-2006 07:58 PM

It sounds like something might be rubbing on your rotor or inside your drum
I know I had this problem not to long ago and the anti rattle clip had actually come off and was rubbing against the drum when the brakes were applied at a slow speed

I also had the same thing about 2 months ago. I changed the rear drums and shoes and the noise went away ( I was due for a brake replacement). The symptoms for me were the noise and my e-brake was not engaging very well.

hmm

Hmm I have Isolated the problem to the FRONT not the rear

imported_JDM-EG6 25-May-2006 10:20 AM

did u check ur pads upfront? maybe they need replacing cuz mine do on a car I just bought and its seems to be doing the same thing u just described  ill be changing them within a day or 2 i think

imported_Moe_Mentum 25-May-2006 10:37 AM

I figured it might be the rear as well. I am having the same problem but I know its the rears, I changed the drums recently but not the pads and at slow stop it kidn of makes a grinding sound.

sounds like your pads are rattling...lower b joints will do similar but it's more when you turn your wheel at slow speed or go threw a bumpy parking lot at slow speed. a ball joint dosent' need to be "loose" I have seen some and had some that were toast but were almost seized so....I woudl say it's your front pads.

go get some new pads adn rotors...like 100 bux ct has a sale on their pads I think

imported_GSR-LO 08-Jun-2006 09:58 AM

still ongoing

I checked the pads they have more then 80% left.. still big.

I ensured they move freely in the channel.

the rotor.. impossible to tell if its warped without a machine but it appears okay. I will attempt to change the rotor to see if things change

imported_kickz 08-Jun-2006 12:59 PM

it could be the dust shield that is rubbing the rotors

chris_si98 08-Jun-2006 01:42 PM

you got metal on metal contact somewhere (it sounds like)..

are you sure its not from the rear?

imported_GSR-LO 08-Jun-2006 04:02 PM

not rear

Hey I can confirm 100% it is not the rear. I had someone lean down and listen and its definalty the front wheel.

I got the same **** too!! i cant figure it out for the life of me. Doesnt happen in the wet either, im pretty sure its the brake pads because everytime i put anti seize on the backside of the pad it goes away but returns shortly. I dont care anymore i jus brake a little harder now...

bbarbulo 08-Jun-2006 04:47 PM

I'd just start with the simplest solution, new rotors and pads. if that doesn't cure it, then I'd look at more serious, more costly options.

imported_GSR-LO 09-Jun-2006 08:39 AM

it was the pads

kwikb16a2: funny I was doing the same thing, just harder braking doesnt make the noise.

I thought about it and I was about to change more parts, but I decided to switch the break pads from one side to the other.

Then if the noise started on the other side I could attribute this as a Pad issue.

Once I swapped the pads for Left/Right, the noise has been gone.

I have no clue how it fixed it, but if the noise returns a new set of pads is being installed.

The ones on there are at least 80% left

I had the same problem, but once my drums were heated up for a first break around the corner of my street, seemed to go away, probaly just means time to change them

imported_Moe_Mentum 12-Jun-2006 05:09 PM

Like I said before I have the same problem, sounds like its coming from my passenger side drum. I took it off and took a good look at the pads. Mine had a few chips in it and larger chunk taken out of it. I am pretty sure that is the cause for me. I sanded down the sharp edges as best as possible. The sound is minimal now but I would suggest looking at the condition of the pads again.

imported_GSR-LO 26-Jun-2006 09:44 AM

fixed.

Hey I fixed it..

Even thought the pads were still good, I decided to re-do the brakes. as obviously this was the issue

One of my mechanic friends for honda told me to clean everything and grease it all up good with Anti-cease and re-assemble.

I cleaned all the surf rust, bought new pads (raybestos) Ceramics..

Put 2 new rotors, and calipers.. Noise is gone..
