Heating springs??
 

well today i got new rims for my civic and when i put them on i realized that i need to lower my car!.. i heard u can take it to a shop and have them heated and just watch them drop.. but i dunno doesnt sound right... is it safe??.. what happens if i do this??.. thanks..

it's not safe, and it's not right. look for used springs from someone who's gone to coilovers maybe?

what happens is the spring loses it's 'springy' properties. metal can be heat treated but heat makes metal hard and brittle. this is not something you want your spring to be. do you want a brittle spring??

hmm thanks... i didnt know that... no i dont want a brittle spring!... cuz over here in los angeles we have alot of rough road in downtown... i can imagine that with some brittle springs!... ehh... well yeah i guess ill just buy springs.. n e suggestions?.. how much of a drop should i geT?.. its on stock springs right now with 17's

i had chopped springs and wasnt low enough so i heated them was a wicked hieght i loved it. had them chopped for months maybe even a year, i remember the day i took them out because i felt safe/fine to drive the car but the second i took em out of the car and seen what they looked like from that long im surprised i didnt kill myself. they were broken in three places and mangled, thats when i switched to coilovers.

dont recommend doing that to your self you could be cruising break a spring and lose total control.

if you want somthing just to drop it and dont' really care get springs, there pretty cheap :thumbup:

hahaha...well, first of all what's your budget :shrugs:

umm i say 350... cuz i only got 350 right now!! that im willing 2 spend

your drop is the same with 15's 195/55/15 as it is with 17s at 205/40/17 as both are the same overall diametre of 23.5". a good drop is about 1.75F/1.5R if you still want the car to be fully driveable anywhere...2.25F/2R if ya want zero gap between tires and fender but it will be harder to drive cause you'll have to avoid alot of ****. camber also comes into play, if ya lower 2" or more you will forsure need a camber kit which is another few hundred. your from cali you said, so you can get brand new springs shipped to you from ebay for $149usd (H&R sport which is 1.75/1.5 or race which is 2.25/2.0)

another route is a coil-over spring or dedicated coil-overs such as omni which are more expensive. a coil-over like ground-control will allow you to set the drop you want from 0.5" to 3" drop. either way, i'd recommend a set of shocks too like tokico illuminas to do it right, otherwise the ride will be bouncy and harsh.

for $300usd you can get tokico illuminas and for another $149usd you can get H&R sport or race, because you are buying within us and having shipped within us. pm me if ya wanna know where or just search ebay for tokico civic or agx kyb civic

if you want something to just drop it go to automotive warehouse and grab there coilovers they go for $119 all day long
not top of the line but there BRAND NEW.

check honda-tech.com classifieds for used springs. most of those guys are in california.

I recommend H&R, Eibach, Progress, Tein...

just don't buy OBX, Weapon R, Matrix, APC... or any other crap company.

$350 is a good budget, check out some local shops.

with 17 inch rims, HR sports or some tein s tech springs would be good

350 will should cover a quality spring, new or slightly used, and the installation if you cannot do it yourself. Just research, there's so much information about this that you should be able to make a good decision.
