Headers...

hey peoples....My EF has got about 236 clicks on it all stock just an intake and full exhaust......it's a 1.5 dx and is running strong.......I already know it's a weak engine, and i've been debating about just putting some headers on it and leaving it at that.....but people are telling me that may complicate things...... any insight???

bbarbulo 28-Mar-2007 03:33 PM

it would be an absolute waste of time and money to replace that header. you would get MUCH better results getting an MPFI conversion and/or an Si 5 speed tranny with the nice short gearing. that's performance you can take to the bank!! the header, IMO... a nice header is just bling for the engine if you got nothing else done internally.

imported_redlineracer 28-Mar-2007 03:42 PM

i'm sorry i never mentioned the car is aaauuuttooo argh.....

that's the only reason i thought of slapping on the headers and calling it done.....i also thought about manual conversion but such an old car naaahhh...i plan on grabbing a new car soon but until then i just want a little more pep from my EF....and yes i know auto, is auto.....but i got from my dad a looong time ago and we've had the car for about 8 years now.....

zeeman 28-Mar-2007 03:56 PM

you won't get any pep from a header....the DPFI hondas were never designed to have "pep".
Do as bruno said, you'll be much happier with the results....its pretty easy to do too.

bbarbulo 28-Mar-2007 04:11 PM

yeah I got an auto ed3, there is just absolutely no sense in spending any money on performance mods. besides keeping the car in as mint of shape as possible, save your money for when you get a newer car. I spend all my money on maintaining the car and fixing things that the previous owners broke or abused, the car is now as near-mint as can be for a 17 year old daily driver. besides rust, the car runs and drives perfect, and that's exactly what you should be shooting for... then when you do buy a newer car to modify, you can keep this one as a winter driver.

here is an idea of what things I've replaced/repaired in the last 3 years:

timing belt
water pump
tensioner
distributor seal
fuel filter
windshield wiper linkage
fresh air intake for the driver side vent
front engine/tranny mount
rotors
pads
shoes
drums
master cylinder
main relay
DRL relay
valve lash adjust.
valve cover gasket set
plugs
plug wires
dizzy cap
dizzy rotor
upper control arms
tires
midpipe
axle back
speakers
cd player
trunk latch
front grille
radiator
axles
window weatherstripping
removed dead A/C
alternator belt
power steering belt
alternator
tie rods

I still wanna replace:
lower ball joints
tranny fluid filter

I still wanna buy or rebuild spares:
starter
distributor

imported_redlineracer 28-Mar-2007 04:33 PM

wow, thanks......yeah that's EXACTLY what i have done....there's just some rust i gotta work on but yeah everything else is solid and i know exactly what u guys are saying because it's an auto, i know it's pointless but being such an avid enthusiast and seeing friends all grab some nice rides it just hurts driving sucha slow car for the past 5 years!

bbarbulo 28-Mar-2007 04:38 PM

fair enough... I feel ya. we're not all born into money like some of our friends. I worked hella hard and made hella money... dumped all my money into my turbo Civic and now... I'm scared to drive it thanks to thieves, police, idiot drivers, and parkinglot doording bandits.... so even though I have what I consider a 'nice car'.... I still roll around in a rusty 90 Civic auto. so don't feel bad, it's not the car that makes the man.

save your money, and one day you'll be the guy who other guys admire for having a nice ride. as you get older, your perspective will change on what's cool and fun and necessary. like more and more these days I wanna pull my turbo out and swap in air conditioning :D

imported_redlineracer 28-Mar-2007 05:03 PM

lol thanks man........well it got me through univeristy and I finish in april so my plan was to wait it out until i graduate to grab a new ride....i guess i'm just maybe getting too anxious........in terms of working hella hard yessir i know whut ur saying!!!........but yeah soon enough i guess, just getting so impatient you know, like i just can't explain it...I'M DONE SCHOOL.....you know and i just want everything! i've waited for sooo long!

imported_redlineracer 28-Mar-2007 05:12 PM

hey wait u said MPFI conversion.....would that make a difference with my auto???

bbarbulo 28-Mar-2007 05:12 PM

again I understand man... like I see cats around the U rolling in like E classes and 3 series and G35cs and isht, but you know... it is what it is, their moms and dads got coinage, and I don't... well at least not THAT much. especially asian chix y0, they roll in style fo sho. but fack it, way I see it is if I didn't earn it, I don't deserve it.

hope you got a job lined up after school, else you're in for a rude awakening. or at least I hope you got connections at someplace you can start work. it's damn hard as a fresh grad, lemme tell ya. I went through all this like 5 years ago...

also, don't overspend on a car. I know so many guys who work work work and got like sick cars, then a year later they're broke as hell and can't afford the car and they gotta sell it cuz it's just too much to pay like $600 per month in financing charges, plus another $300 per month in insurance. get something newer but not brand new, something cheap and economical you can dick around with, like a 6th gen Civic or something. even a nice 7th gen sedan... that's what I'm looking at for a secondary daily driver in a few months.

bbarbulo 28-Mar-2007 05:14 PM

yeah MPFI is a great way to help out the lil D15B2. unfortunately the auto tranny WILL rob you of some of that gain, so again... unless you get the parts super dirt cheap... and can actually find (IMPOSSIBLE) an auto ECU that's OBD0 and MPFI (you'd have to go JDM I think)...

imported_Turbo-D 28-Mar-2007 05:19 PM

why not consider a 5spd swap? I think your loosing all your power with the auto trans. Not sure if you want to keep the auot, but a friend of mine bought an entire car of $100 and took all the parts he needed for the swap. Just a thought. Goodluck

bbarbulo 28-Mar-2007 05:29 PM

man car that old, you risk breaking a lotta seized bolts and stuff... esp if it's rusted... why bother with a five speed swap? it's be really great on a southern car, but :shrugs:

I'm actually thinking of importing a southern 90-91 sedan if I have the time to go down there for a few weeks and shop around. I'd prefer an old rust free sedan to nearly anything else. In that case, it would be worth doing whatever to it!

yeah exactly what i was thinking, but honestly i really was thinking of doing a 5spd swap because the car has been with me for so long, i know exactly what's been done and needs to be done......plus im not looking to build a beast or anything like that, just something i can have fun with u know, i was just thinking about that today, whether to convert to 5spd and swap in a b20.........but then is it really worth it??? what if i just converted to 5spd and no swap, just to quench my thrust, because lets face it, that car was not made for auto.......so what if i did a 5spd swap, and switched to MPFI....?? cost wise i think it would be worth it....no?

bbarbulo 28-Mar-2007 08:17 PM

post a pic of your car.

no matter what car it is, how old... after all the maintenance and fixes, I'd go rims and suspension first. that would be the very first mods, and I'd do them in one shot (not one or the other). then, if I was to build my super cool 90-91 rust free sedan, I'd go either Si/ZC tranny and built naturally aspirated D16 VTEC (Z6 or Y8)... or I'd go the first gen B16A swap, then I'd rebuild the head and throw it on a B20 block before putting it all in the car.

I love EF's, especially clean ones and have always wanted one. I say do it up, MPFI and 5spd....maybe a vtec head while your at it....if thats not enough, then you can always swap in a b-series, you'll already have most of the hard stuff done (converting to MPFI and 5spd).

1sykcoupe 28-Mar-2007 11:11 PM

i saw get an intake and u call it a day...
until u get ur new car. let me know if u wanna sell those sir rims. i call dibbs!

b18bHatch 29-Mar-2007 12:44 AM
