HEADER SWAP ON AN EK CX ILLEGAL, please help!!??

Okay guys here's a better question. Anyone who has swapped there header on a 96-98 ek, I think its illegal, how strictly is this enforced? and will I pass emisions??????? Please help. Thanks

ELGUY 20-Jul-2005 02:25 PM

I'm relocating the Cat to under the car.

Nova_Dust 20-Jul-2005 02:33 PM

Why is it illegal? You still have the cat converter, you should still pass emission, no?

ELGUY 20-Jul-2005 02:40 PM

Yeah the cat is still on the car, just moved. I know it is illegal to "remove or relocate" the cat, but I think its a stupid rule. We're being responisble and leaving the cat on, and it should fire the same as all the other designs of civics, crx's and acura els that have a d series witht the cat under the car. So why pick on the horsepower challeneged?? Any thoughts guys?

Nova_Dust 20-Jul-2005 03:00 PM

I didn't know it was illegal to relocate it.

Can you argue that your old one broke, and the used replacement is cheaper than a new Y7 one from the dealer?

ELGUY 20-Jul-2005 03:08 PM

yeah probably, I think they'd be okay with that. They'd still probably want it back to stock though. Unless the person was a honda nut, they probably wouldnt know it was changed. your probably safe if its there. Logic sais that it should still do well in emmissions testing.

Nova_Dust 20-Jul-2005 03:14 PM

Who is going to check it?

ELGUY 20-Jul-2005 03:17 PM

they may check it when you get your etest done. some places have a chart saying if the car requires one or not, but I dont know about location. I'm just parranoid. I'm putting it on this saturday!!

imported_Moe_Mentum 20-Jul-2005 03:42 PM

WHo cares.. get the header. I have my Cat relocated with my swap and when i got my E-test done I wasn't questioned. If you are questioned, just take it to another shop. Heck I could have even brought a different civic in. He didn't even check the VIN # ... just asked to see it on my registration. So technically I could have shown him my registration and brought another black 96-00 Sedan in for the test.

You shouldn't have any problems swapping the header as long as you keep the cat converter. It doesn't matter where the converter is as long as it's on the car and it's functioning properly.

bbarbulo 20-Jul-2005 05:12 PM

as long as it's in the same place as the VTEC models I don't see a problem. the reason they dont' want you to relocate it is cuz the cat requires heat to work, and the farther down it is, the longer it takes for it to heat up. but since the VTEC models have it under the car, I think you can relocate it there if you want.

as long as you pass emissions, and you have a cat present.... I don't think anyone can hassle you.

thanks guys.
