H22 Swap

How come there aren't that many people that do it?

I know you lose power steering and A/C, but most of us don't have that anyways.

Considering the price and the HP you get considering how cheap it is, why isn't it more popular?

yes the engine is cheap for the power that it has, but the actual swap is more complicated than a B series swap. So it costs more even though the engine costs the same as a b16.

also a lot of ppl are scared of the fact that the engine starts burning oil after sometime and that the transmission is a cable tranny.....or the best one is that the front of the car would be too heavy ..... most of these things are just B.S. and can be changed.

Theres alot of myths about the motors + swap, they dont burn anymore oil then any beseries motor, the tranny is not cable, its hydrolic, However u have shifter cables. It really isnt a hard swap to do, theres a huge swap thread on honda-tech, pretty much answers every question u have about it and how to do it.

and i believe there are success in retaining a/c and p/s with an h22 swap in civics... you just can't use ur own p/s and a/c pumps... and you need some customs

and in terms of weight... the h22 motor isn't that much heavier that it make a huge difference... some people just relocate the battery, but its really not necessary... some better spring rates springs and nicer shocks will do the job... plus you won't be slamming your car (if you really going for performance, not looks), so that's not an issue

then in terms of burning oil... ALL ENGINE BURNS OIL!!! however, it is true that some h22 have some burning oil issues (but its only some), so its not big of an issue... all vtec burns oil quicker when you vtec a lot.....

and the swap is not really that complicated, it just takes a bit more time... but lots of mech or swap-pros around this forum can do it for cheap liek from 500-800 consider you provide with all the proper needed parts...

one more thing is... the only thing that is bad about the h22 is the tranny gear ratio... that's all... the motor is freaking fast on a civic, but the tranny blows it... that's all... still good enough of a fun street car with that much torque

check out teknotik, they have motors for 2200 to 3800 (just motor/tranny to complete swap kit) it comes with a/c and p/s pumps as well... its a good price and their motors are source from japan... has a bit more torque over usdm ones too...

good luck, its a good choice for fun street car

97+ h22s do burn oil. They are not a hard swap at all. It takes a little bit of thinking and fab skills to do it clean. Other than that its as easy as abc.
