gsr vtec question

i heard that sometimes vtec is a little funny when it comes to kicking in and doesn't always kick in... is that true? i am getting my gsr swap done today and i am picking it up this evening after work and am just curious what to exect... its in my 1996 civic hb...

imported_Mischev 31-Mar-2006 11:10 AM

ive never heard of that, i know that vtec usually kicks in at a particular rev. but i know a lot of ppl with vtec and ive never heard it not kicking in when its supposed to

imported_mikepasini 31-Mar-2006 11:13 AM

maybe that was talking about sohc motors? i dunno. it was on the board here somewhere before

imported_t_dot_SiR 31-Mar-2006 11:35 AM

it kicks in all the time, all vtecs... but its a matter of hearing it or not

i can hear it all the time, but when i floor that beast, it screams louder, just like a girl hahaha....... if you go soft on it, regular scream, if you go hard on it, real loud, consider you have I/H/E haha

well if everything works as it should vtec will kick in every time.
With a gsr you should hear two changes in the tone of the engine, 1 when vtec kicks in around 4400 and another 1 when the IABs open up around 5800 or so.

i got a b18c in my civic hb it works fine ...... and if u are having that problam it could be do to the vtec selinoide being faulty..... work some times and not the other times...... or wiering

ill tell you right now, my lil jap motor doesnt like the cold. v-tec doesnt work untill she is warm, and i mean warm. i always let my car warm up in the morning, just so v-tec works when i drive. this was mostly in the winter. my car warms up now twice as fast and it kicks all the time. it should work all the time cuz if your car is warm you shouldnt be near 4800 rpm!

CaptHowdy 31-Mar-2006 07:18 PM

yeah from my understanding the jdm motors wait until the motor is warm (and honestly, you shouldn't be revving that high unless your motor is warm)

it also won't work if you don't have a knock sensor.

and also, if vtec solenoid is faulty, you will have a CODE on CEL... so don't worry about it too much, it works!! haha

no but, when you cold start your motor, i dont think vtec kicks in when the motor is cold. pls correct me if i am wrong, cus when my motor is cold, it doesnt kick in for sure. but once i drive for like couple mins it works fine.

please correct me if i am wrong, cus i want to know this as well.

thx

i have vtec hyper led, so it lights up when vtec kicks in, so thats how i know for sure when it kicks in.
