GSR Vtec Problems

I have a buddy that has a 93 hatch and he just got a b18c1 droped into it. now he is having some issues with it. vtec will not engage when the car warms up. the engine is an obd2 but they guy that swapped it used his original Si harness from a 93 that was in there. its giving tho codes knock sensor and eld. vtec just wont turn on, oil pressure is good, we tryed a different vtec solenoid and same thing. right now there is a obd1 gsr ecu in it but we tryed hooking up a hondata s300 with stock gsr maps. anyone know if the knock sensor can cause vtec to not work properly. also would an o2 sensor be able to mess it up? the eld code we cant figure out what can throw that code.

any help would be appriciated
thanks

not having the knock sensor wired up will usually cause vtec NOT to work (from my experiences).

Chip that obd1 p72 and then all you have to do is disable the knock sensor in crome (pm me if you need help with this). You can also disable the ELD, to help with your code 20.

we tried disabling them both with the hondata but it was doing the same thing. can this mean that its an internal problem like cams or something like that? i know timing is messed up and thats getting fixed today. anyone else have any more suggestions

in the vtec solonoid their is a steel mesh kinda filter thing, try cleaning it, it could be dirty not allowing oil through. I had a problem once were vtec wasnt enaging probally were the vtec was studdering and that fixed it.

i've never seen cams cause vtec not to work.
Vtec looks for a few things to activate.
RPM signal
VSS signal
ECT signal
Oil pressure signal
And of course a 12V signal from the ecu to the solenoid itself.

Try hooking a wire up to the (+) side of the battery and connecting it to the solenoid, the solenoid should click when you feed it the 12V. If it doesn't click then replace the solenoid.

Also check the oil level, if the oil is low vtec won't engage. Also check what trigga said, see if the screen inside of the solenoid is dirty.

Andrew, is it possible that the vtec was never connected when the swap was done?

I am just wondering if he ever had vtec work in the first place?

:shrugs:

Well he said hes using a p72 ecu (vtec ecu) and has an si harness, so I doubt it. BUT it's a possibility.. since he used an si ecu, he didn't wire in any clips or pin anything, so it should be fine, but i would still check for opens (always eliminate the easy things first)

Is he sure its a b18c1 and not a b18b? lol

Like Zeman said check the vtec soleniod for functionality if no joy, try disabling ect check for vtec (if hondata has it), if no joy try connecting D6 (vtec soleniod) and A4 (vtec pressure valve) wires http://www.phearable.net/tech/wiring/vtpsbypass.gif
If still nothing ring threw all the vtec wiring.

Is the ECU a USDM, JDM, CDM??
can u give the ecu part # code?
whats the idle like?
whats the alt votage like?
Check all your fuses and grounds.

i personaly checked the vtec solinod and it works fine, we even tryed a different one and it was doing the same thing. screen inside is clean doesnt appear to be bad. Oil level is good no problems there and battery has 14.1V when car running.

The ecu he is using is an obd1 gsr because apperantly what the guy did was leave the obd1 plugs and convert the harness at the engine bay? im not 100% sure on this im gonna try to find out exactly what was done.

Once the car is cold and just starts warming up when you take if for a spin vtec engages and you can feel it a bit too but after 10-15 mins of driving problems pop up. The ELD code pops up right away and when you clear it while driving and rpm in vtec range, vtec turns on than ELD comes back and vtec shuts off.

Right now i think the knock sensor is gone and its causing the ELD code to come up which is all causing vtec to not work. Im gonna change the knock sensor tonight and see what happens.

thanks guys

i think ELD is an american thing, electrical load detector... you need a harwarware fix to remove that part of the ECU, right zeeman? like gotta desolder some isht. my ECU has the same code, it's a US P06 with Hondata. but I've got a Canadian P06 that I'm ready to chip one day...

brianmcgaugh 05-Apr-2007 03:44 AM

yes ELD is a us thing JDM and CDM dont have it.
Dont think theres a hardware mod to remove it, but there very well can be.
