Good mechanic downtown TO?
 

I need a new main seal for my 91 Civic Si. Looking for a clean and thorough mechanic specializing in hondas, preferably downtown. Any suggestions appreciated.

Yeah. Joe at Altech will set you straight. I live downtown too and would live to do my own work but am inhibited by space. I can't work ony car in an underground garage. I go to Joe and he treats me well. It may be what you are looking for.

Although I'd suggest you do it yourself. Its not hard and you'll just get ----ed over with labor charges.

What is this guy going to do when his 20+ year axle won't come out without the help of a $1000 torch set, 30 ton press, $400 impact gun fed by a couple grand air compressor that has to be paid for every month?

You clowns have no clue what it's like to run a shop or the overhead. That's why we charge what we charge and that's why I left honda customers. Telling me $500 is way too expensive for an engine swap. Now I have customers paying 4x that because they want it done RIGHT, with no problems.

To the OP, don't try doing it yourself. Pay the (more or less) $500 to get it done right, and if it leaks within a year, you'll get warranty! People always make it seem like doing slightly bigger jobs like transmissions are a piece of cake. Ya.. I can get a transmission out in 60 minutes IF nothing goes wrong. if something breaks or is seized, what you gonna do? Post for more help?

I worked on hondas for 8 years, I've seen/done it all.. and I can honestly say, even I'd be kinda skeptical about touching a trans on a 20 year old car. When ---- breaks, that 3 hour job can turn into a week if you don't know what you're doing. Goodluck dood.

And for shop references, only place I recommend my old honda customers to go to now are b-line in sauga and igarage.

I will never respect mechanics. I've been scammed by White/Arab/Chinese (general population of mechanics in Toronto/Sauga) thousands of dollars for easy fixes.

1. Car sat for two months brought into mechanic. Walked out with 3200 bill
2. Car needed electrical wiring from first mechanic ---- up $1000 (Never got fixed properly)

I could go on.

$1000 torch set?! HAHAHAHA Easy there, who would need a $1000 torch set? I used a crappy tire kit on a 67 Thunderbird. Bolts covered in 40 year old rust. Why would any need a 30 ton press for a civilian vehicle? My 2 ton jack, 3 ton stands + various wood/cement blocks have lifted all my cars including a 67 Thunderbird.

The reality is this profession is no longer...a profession. Its a bunch of shaddy mother----ers fixing a issue to have that issue become a problem once more while at the same time inspecting the car looking for 'Money' (Money-opportunities of ----ing the car up elsewhere).

Dealerships are the same.

In time this profession is either going to have strict enforced government regulation and inspections on quality care and business practice. Or its going to die out altogether because the reality is, EVERYTHING that a car needs can be serviced repaired using Youtube/Search Engine.

And anyone who pays 1-2k for an engine swap is a ----ing idiot and deserves to get raped.

Hey, i would recommend Level Auto, I take my 2007 honda civic here and they are affordable, and reasonable with their pricing. They are on danforth rd close to the city.

As for the comments on mechanics are rip off, i guess thats a valid statement in all trades. There are rip off when it comes to mechanics all over the place, but the thing is to find one that you can trust and someone who also does the job right the first time.

I think people say they are rip offs from what i have noticed cause most of the time people buy cars they cant afford to maintain or fix.

Mechanics have to spend a lot of money on tools, i know i use to do an apprenticeship and got out of it cause it was way to much money to do this trade as well the money is always variable in different times of year and could not afford to stay in this trade. I give mechanics a lot of respect cause at the end of the day they do jobs that most of us would not want to do.
