Gas tank questions

Hi,

I have a 1992 civic.

According to the old owner, it has a new gas tank in it. I'm not really sure why, these don't usually rust on hondas do they? This car doesn't even have much rust as it was sprayed at Krown..

So that's kinda weird, but anyways. This "new" gas tank, again according to the old owner, is a smaller tank that was from a civic but another model, he said some "economy" model? The tank only fits 30 litres when I drive it a bit past empty. I think i've put 34 litres or so when it was way past empty.

Does this all sound legit? Is there another civic that came with a tank this size? Is it common practise and perfectly fine to run this tank in my car? Any idea why the tank would be replaced?

My other issue is that when I fill up, it only goes to a bit more than 3/4 tank on a full tank and never on actual full. I'm guessing this is because of the smaller tank? Is there any way to fix this or will it always be like this?

Thanks

yeah the VX had a 38 liter tank compared to the standard 45 liter tank. and yes, gas tanks do rust, or could have been punctured due to mechanical damage (read: hitting a discarded muffler on the highway)

Yeah, I just replaced a gas tank in my 91 sedan, next up filler neck.

Every gas tank rusts unless its plastic, ESPECIALLY cars that are 15 years old ie. yours.

Oh ok that's cool. Any way to fix my guage then? If the sending unit is the right one for the tank shouldn't it be reading correct? Anything I can do?

you could try locating a VX of USDM CX sending unit, but it's gonna cost ya. so why bother, I'm sure there are better things you could spend $200 on for your car... like a solid tuneup, some shocks, bushings, or some ball joints.

You might want to try a local u-pull junkyard.

I know there's a yard just outside of Barrie going towards Angus. I can't remember the name. Last time I was there they had two rows of EF civics. Only one 91 Si picked cleaned the rest were DX and a couple VX models.

Yeah you're right it's too much work... I was hoping there was an easier way.
