Fixing A/C suggestions?
 

Needs some advice on fixing up my A/C. Last year when I checked my A/C compressor was seized so I definetly need a new one. I'm guessing it wouldn't be wise to just change the compressor alone, and that I should probably replace or service some of the other components. I was supposed to do this last year and from my notes this is what I wrote down to look into replacing.

Sanden A/CCompressor
Filter Drier/Accumulator
Orfice Tube
Expansion Valve

I am not sure if the bottom 3 are absolutely necessary when changing the compressor so any help would be great. If there is anything I am missing please feel free to let me know. Summer is coming and I don't want to be stuck in the heat!

the bottom three are not necessary. those are items if you plan to upgrade fluid specs from the old pre 1993 stuff to the new stuff. but you have a 99 you said so it should be fine. either way, a/c is not exactly user servicable.... mount the new compressor and take it to an A/C shop who will test for leaks and pressure, then refill your unit and you'll be good to go.

The only reason I mentioned the other stuff was because the service manual mentioned to replace those parts. Thought they were kind of a kill two birds with one stone type deal like replacing the water pump with your clutch.

well it's strange that your A/C failed so early. likely you developed a leak somehow, lost your fluid, and the compressor seized up from non-use.

so if the parts aren't too expensive, yeah replace them. those all have seals in them that can dry out over time (and from not being used/lubricated by the coolant fluid)... but it's better to find the leak first and then replace parts as necessary. so it might even be a good idea to see if you can have the system tested/diagnosed before you go out and buy parts... I think certain places have free inspections or price quotes (like Midas or Canadian Tire)... take it there and get a list of recommended items to replace. Buy those items, replace them yourself, then go and have it filled properly and tested again for leaks.

Yeah, it is a good idea to replace all those parts since it's a closed system and any work that needs to be done on it requires it to be evacuated and refilled... but like I said, it's not 100% necessary in most cases. Your case... again, have it tested and decide from there.
